Book Synopsis Rock Coast Geomorphology by : D.M. Kennedy

Download or read book Rock Coast Geomorphology written by D.M. Kennedy. This book was released on 2014-08-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocky landforms dominate large portions of the world’s coast. Cliffs and shore platforms form spectacular landscapes, yet when compared to other landforms they are relatively unstudied with many contemporary controversies dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. The past decade has seen a reinvigoration of research driven by advances in technology that now enable precise measurements of erosion to the micron scale and quantification of wave energy onto and through cliff edifices to be made, as well as being able to directly date rock surfaces. In order to integrate this diverse range of research this volume’s regional approach first integrates the latest data with longstanding theory and then analyses this research through the boundary conditions that exist in each area. The volume brings together the research leaders in the field; includes chapters on nearly all the major rock coasts of the world and identifies future research needs.

Book Synopsis Coastal Dynamics and Landforms by : Alan S. Trenhaile

Download or read book Coastal Dynamics and Landforms written by Alan S. Trenhaile. This book was released on 1997. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive reference text for senior undergraduates, graduate students, and instructors and working professionals in the coastal field. It provides a thorough survey of our present state of geomorphological knowledge across a very broad spectrum of coastal types, including topics, such as the form and processes operating on cold coasts, deltas, cohesive cold coasts, and coral reefs, that have rarely been included in general coastal texts. There is also a detailed discussion of the nature, origin, and transport of beach sediment, and the possible effects of future sea-level changes on coastal environments. Anthropological influences and managerial implications are discussed in several of the chapters. All the material draws upon up-to-date research and scientific findings.

Book Synopsis Theoretical Glaciology by : K. Hutter

Download or read book Theoretical Glaciology written by K. Hutter. This book was released on 2017-03-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose and scope of this book on theoretical glaciology is outlined in the Introduction. Its aim is to study the theoretical aspects of'ice mechanics' and the 'dynamics of ice masses in a geophysical environment. For the mature reader, the book can serve as an introduction to glaciology. How ever, this is not what I would regard as advisible. Glaciology is an inter disciplinary science in which many special scientific disciplines play their part, from descriptive geography to fairly abstract mathematics. Advance ment will evolve from a merger of two or more branches of scientific specialization. In the last 20 years, several researchers in different fields of glaciology have written books emphasizing the aspects of their specialities and I have listed some which are known to me at the end of the Introduction. When glancing through these books, one recognizes that the mathematical aspects of glaciology are generally glossed over and, to date, there seems to be nothing available which concentrates on these. Therefore, I have written this book in an effort to close the gap and no apologies are offered for the mathematical emphasis. Rather, I believe that this neglect has, to a certain extent, aggra vated progress in the modelling of glaciology problems.
