Book Synopsis Site Characterization in Karst and Pseudokarst Terraines by : Richard C. Benson

Download or read book Site Characterization in Karst and Pseudokarst Terraines written by Richard C. Benson. This book was released on 2015-09-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a practical strategy for obtaining a more complete and accurate geologic site characterization. The strategy and methods to characterize complex geologic settings are readily available. The strategy utilizes readily available technology, basic science and good, old-fashioned common sense resulting in a solid understanding of geologic and even karst or pseudokarst conditions. We provide an introduction to many off-the-shelf methods available for site characterization as well as examples of their application throughout the book. The purpose of a geologic site characterization is to understand the 3-dimensional geologic framework, along with the engineering and hydrologic properties of a site including any man-made impacts. A well-done site characterization is the cornerstone of all geotechnical, groundwater and environmental projects. The geologic conditions, particularly karst conditions, can significantly impact a site including its structural stability, groundwater pathways and potential for rapid transport or traps for contaminants. Once we have adequately characterized the geologic conditions can we carry our remediation, design and construction, model flow, and make risk assessments that are accurate and reliable.

Book Synopsis Geologic Site Characterization with an Emphasis in Karst and Pseudokarst by : Lynn B. Yuhr

Download or read book Geologic Site Characterization with an Emphasis in Karst and Pseudokarst written by Lynn B. Yuhr. This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A geologic site characterization is the technical foundation for all geotechnical and environmental projects. The objective of a geologic site characterization is to gain an understanding of subsurface conditions that will impact the engineering or environmental decisions made at a site. This effort can be fairly straightforward in a uniform geologic setting. However, karst often provides some of the most variable and diverse geologic settings to deal with. A wide range of topics will be covered to include a discussion of the problem, a strategy using an integrated systems approach of appropriate methods, using adequate levels of site coverage and considering the impact of scale. Case histories will be presented to illustrate the process. If the geologic site characterization is done right, subsequent geotechnical and environmental decisions can be made with a high degree of confidence and be supported by reliable technical data. This course is based upon many decades of experience, which is presented in the book Site Characterization in Karst and Pseudo- Karst Terrains written by Richard C. Benson and Lynn B. Yuhr being published by Springer in 2015. Lynn Yuhr has specialized in site characterization with an emphasis on karst for more than three decades."--The 14th Sinkhole Conference program with abstracts, page 15.

Book Synopsis Karst Aquifers - Characterization and Engineering by : Zoran Stevanović

Download or read book Karst Aquifers - Characterization and Engineering written by Zoran Stevanović. This book was released on 2015-02-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical training guidebook makes an important contribution to karst hydrogeology. It presents supporting material for academic courses worldwide that include this and similar topics. It is an excellent sourcebook for students and other attendees of the International Karst School: Characterization and Engineering of Karst Aquifers, which opened in Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2014 and which will be organized every year in early summer. As opposed to more theoretical works, this is a catalog of possible engineering interventions in karst and their implications. Although the majority of readers will be professionals with geology/hydrogeology backgrounds, the language is not purely technical making it accessible to a wider audience. This means that the methodology, case studies and experiences presented will also benefit water managers working in karst environments.

Book Synopsis Sinkholes and Subsidence by : Tony Waltham

Download or read book Sinkholes and Subsidence written by Tony Waltham. This book was released on 2005. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinkholes and Subsidence will provide a twenty-first century account of how the various subsidence features in carbonate and evaporite rocks cause problems in development and construction, in our living environment. The authors consider the various methods used in site investigations, both direct and indirect, to locate the features associated with these associated hazards and risks, highlighting the value of hazard mapping. Various ground improvement techniques, such as grouting, and the special types of foundation structures which deal with these problems are covered towards the end of the book. This book is supplemented with a wealth of actual case studies and solutions, written by invited experts. TOC:Introduction Classification and nomenclature. Failures in rock (collapse and caprock sinkholes). Failures in soil (subsidence sinkholes). Buried sinkholes. Induced sinkholes. Collapses in basalt lavas Investigation (direct methods, geophysical methods, site characterization, hazard maps). Engineering and remediation (foundations, reservoirs, dams, ground treatment).
