Book excerpt: This book brings together a group of innovative scholars examining the contemporary issue of effecting gender and sexuality justice in the context of Asia, consonant with engendering a just, equitable and sustainable development for all. These grassroots initiatives are woven through three complementary sections of the book: gender justice in Asia, sexuality justice in Asia, and finding resolutions through conflict. The book foregrounds strategies that aim to call out and challenge existing gender and sexuality injustices with regard to women and the LGBTIQA+ community by: assessing the efficacy of gender mainstreaming policies through micro-credit schemes for women in East Java, Indonesia; proliferating the signifiers of the hijab (veil) by postmodern Malay-Muslim women or ‘Hijabistas’ within the consumerist culture of Malaysia; making visible the injustices of the Syariah legal system for non-Muslim women, and ground-breaking legislation that could potentially recognise same-sex marriages in Thailand; privileging the narratives of gay women diplomats within the highly masculinised field of diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region; foregrounding the narratives of Filipino gay men, intimate partner violence among young Indonesian Christian young people, masculine-identifying lesbians in Singapore, young LGBT people in rural Vietnam, and a Chinese-Muslim Malaysian female-to-male transgender person; and proposing new ways of becoming an inclusive church through the radical act of befriending persons living with HIV and AIDS in Southeast Asia. This book celebrates diverse and inclusive voices and strategies of gender and sexual agents of change in envisioning and bringing to fruition a just and transformative society for all. It is of interest to students and scholars researching gender and sexuality in areas of development studies, international relations, socio-legal studies, and literary studies.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the equal citizenship claims of women and sexual and gender diverse people across several Asian jurisdictions. The volume examines the rich diversity of constitutional responses to sex, gender and sexuality in the region from a comparative perspective. Leading comparative constitutional law scholars identify 'opportunity structures' to explain the uneven advancement of gender equality through constitutional litigation and consider a combination of variables which shape the diverging trajectories of the jurisdictions in this study. The authors also embed the relevant constitutional and legal developments in their historical, political and social contexts. This deep contextual understanding of the relationship between sex, gender, sexuality and constitutionalism greatly enriches the analysis. The case studies reflect a variety of constitutional structures, institutional designs and contextual dynamics which may advance or impede developments with respect to sex, gender and sexuality. As a whole, the chapters further an understanding of the constitutional domain as a fruitful site for advancing gender equality and the rights of sexual and gender diverse people. The jurisdictions covered represent all Asian sub-regions including: East Asia (Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea), South East Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia), and South Asia (India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The introductory framework chapter situates these insights from the region within the broader global context of the evolution of gender constitutionalism.

Book Synopsis Sexuality, Gender and Rights by : Geetanjali Misra

Download or read book Sexuality, Gender and Rights written by Geetanjali Misra. This book was released on 2005-11-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes and documents the groundbreaking work done by many organizations to bring issues of sexuality and rights to public attention, to expand the freedoms of women and sexual minorities and to highlight the unfair distinctions faced by those not conforming to gender and sexual norms across a range of expressions, behaviours and identities in Asia. This volume covers eight countries in South and Southeast Asia. The contributors address issues of power and social hierarchies by using the principles of justice, equality, non-discrimination, and access to rights and services. They cover diverse issues like sexual rights, sexuality education, sexual health services, transsexuals and other sexual minorities, HIV/AIDS prevention, as well as sex work and the representation of sexuality in popular culture. The contributors argue that neither gender nor sexuality can be addressed in isolation from human rights and demonstrate how linking sexuality and gender with human rights has an impact on people`s lives across intersecting issues and contexts. Moving beyond theoretical discussions of sexuality, gender and rights, this volume looks at what these ideas mean in practice and offers examples of the diversity of effective approaches that can be adopted in varied settings. Moreover, it illustrates how sexuality ties in with wider issues—health, personal relationships, economic well-being, equitable access to public services, and the freedom to think, speak and associate without fear of discrimination.

Book excerpt: This volume aims to provide critical and current materials on gender justice in Asia; a very much needed conversations given how much the region is integrated globally, and is rapidly changing economically and geo-politically. Shaped very much by economic, political and social development in the region, women’s condition and position in Asia, have seen marked improvements, but underlying the chapters are also inquiries into the slow and hampered progress towards Asian women achieving substantive justice and equality. The significance of the debates and discussions presented here is that they are the results of research-based efforts by gender academics and activists of all stages and levels of expertise across the Asian region. They seek to make sense of different contexts of continued gender-based discrimination and injustice that women face. In the discourse setting, the author stresses the importance of understanding gender justice as integral to both macro- and micro-economic, and social policies. The other chapters delve into interrogating indigenous feminisms as resistance, reinforcing the emerging knowledge that feminism exists in all cultural contexts; issues of low female labour force participation and the need to recognize the informal sector as work; violence against women with a focus on attitudes towards intimate partner violence, as well interrogating the link between empowerment and microcredit. The other chapters look at women in politics from the perspective of democratization process among grassroots women in Indonesia, and the muslimat in Malaysia. Given that Asia is a hotbed for migration, three chapters cover interestingly different groups of women from differing perspectives. The volume is, therefore, of great utility to academics, activists, students and policy makers alike in providing a fresh outlook in dealing with gender justice issues in Asia.
