Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume #32 of "The IT Revolution in Architecture", this book dedicated to François Roche and his group, raises questions of great importance for the development of architecture. What role can new material technologies have in a process in which the same materials have incorporated growing shares of active behaviors? For example, will they be self-cleaning, un-polluting, self-changing? To what extent will the various components of the buildings be increasingly "interconnected" and able to simulate processes typical of living systems, such as transpiration, dilation, growth, life, and death? Can we begin to speak of living "systems" in architecture? Antonino Di Raimo, PhD works with issues relating to IT and cognition, ecology, and the body. He serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Polis University, Tirana. Founder and editor of the book series before with Birkhäuser and Testo&Immagine and now with Edilstampa, is Antonino Saggio. www.arc1.Uniroma1.it/Saggio/IT/

Book excerpt: As one walks the streets of the Philadelphia, Sauer's buildings stand out for the masterly way he calibrates architectural composition and the varied playfulness of his solutions which, through a complex body of intuitively defined rules, one will find the very essence of Sauer's field of action where he interprets the reality of the setting and its surroundings. This book, then, is an enjoyable, lively read, because it proposes a profoundly democratic architecture that opens individuals' minds, leaves room to the end-user's aesthetic sensibility and presupposes a curious, imagining heart.

Book Synopsis New Insights in the History of Interpreting by : Kayoko Takeda

Download or read book New Insights in the History of Interpreting written by Kayoko Takeda. This book was released on 2016-03-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who mediated intercultural exchanges in 9th-century East Asia or in early voyages to the Americas? Did the Soviets or the Americans invent simultaneous interpreting equipment? How did the US government train its first Chinese interpreters? Why is it that Taiwanese interpreters were executed for Japanese war crimes? Bringing together papers from an international symposium held at Rikkyo University in 2014 along with two select pieces, this volume pursues such questions in an eclectic exploration of the practice of interpreting, the recruitment of interpreters, and the challenges interpreters have faced in diplomacy, colonization, religion, war, and occupation. It also introduces innovative use of photography, artifacts, personal journals, and fiction as tools for the historical study of interpreters and interpreting. Targeted at practitioners, scholars, and students of interpreting, translation, and history, the new insights presented in the ten original articles aim to spark discussion and research on the vital roles interpreters have played in intercultural communication through history. Book Synopsis Reyner Banham by : Nigel Whiteley

Download or read book Reyner Banham written by Nigel Whiteley. This book was released on 2003-08-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intellectual biography of the cultural critic Reyner Banham. Reyner Banham (1922-88) was one of the most influential writers on architecture, design, and popular culture from the mid-1950s to the late 1980s. Trained in mechanical engineering and art history, he was convinced that technology was making society not only more exciting but more democratic. His combination of academic rigor and pop culture sensibility put him in opposition to both traditionalists and orthodox Modernists, but placed him in a unique position to understand the cultural, social, and political implications of the visual arts in the postwar period. His first book, Theory and Design in the First Machine Age (still in print with The MIT Press after forty years), was central to the overhaul of Modernism, and it gave Futurism and Expressionism credibility amid the dynamism and change of the 1960s. This intellectual biography is the first comprehensive critical examination of Banham's theories and ideas, not only on architecture but also on the wide variety of subjects that interested him. It covers the full range of his oeuvre and discusses the values, enthusiasms, and influences that formed his thinking.
