Book excerpt: Computer systems that analyze images are critical to a wide variety of applications such as visual inspections systems for various manufacturing processes, remote sensing of the environment from space-borne imaging platforms, and automatic diagnosis from X-rays and other medical imaging sources. Professor Azriel Rosenfeld, the founder of the field of digital image analysis, made fundamental contributions to a wide variety of problems in image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision. Professor Rosenfeld's previous students, postdoctoral scientists, and colleagues illustrate in Foundations of Image Understanding how current research has been influenced by his work as the leading researcher in the area of image analysis for over two decades. Each chapter of Foundations of Image Understanding is written by one of the world's leading experts in his area of specialization, examining digital geometry and topology (early research which laid the foundations for many industrial machine vision systems), edge detection and segmentation (fundamental to systems that analyze complex images of our three-dimensional world), multi-resolution and variable resolution representations for images and maps, parallel algorithms and systems for image analysis, and the importance of human psychophysical studies of vision to the design of computer vision systems. Professor Rosenfeld's chapter briefly discusses topics not covered in the contributed chapters, providing a personal, historical perspective on the development of the field of image understanding. Foundations of Image Understanding is an excellent source of basic material for both graduate students entering the field and established researchers who require a compact source for many of the foundational topics in image analysis.

Book excerpt: How can symbols have meaning for a subject? Foundations of Understanding argues that this is the key question to ask about intentionality, or meaningful thought. It thus offers an alternative to currently popular linguistic models of intentionality, whose inadequacies are examined: the goal should be to explain, not how symbols, mental or otherwise, can refer to or ‘mean’ states of affairs in the external world, but how they can mean something to us, the users. The essence of intentionality is shown to be conscious understanding, the roots of which lie in experiences of embodiment and goal-directed action. A developmental path is traced from a foundation of conscious understanding in the ability to perform basic actions, through the understanding of the concept of an objective, external world, to the understanding of language and abstract symbols. The work is interdisciplinary: data from the neurosciences and cognitive psychology, and the perspectives of phenomenologists such as Merleau-Ponty, are combined with traditional philosophical analysis. The book includes a chapter on the nature of conscious qualitative experience and its neural correlates. (Series A)

Book excerpt: Fuzzy sets, near sets, and rough sets are useful and important stepping stones in a variety of approaches to image analysis. These three types of sets and their various hybridizations provide powerful frameworks for image analysis. Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Image Processing and Analysis, Volume 1 written by Jean-Charles Pinoli. This book was released on 2014-06-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image processing and image analysis are typically important fields in information science and technology. By “image processing”, we generally understand all kinds of operation performed on images (or sequences of images) in order to increase their quality, restore their original content, emphasize some particular aspect of the information or optimize their transmission, or to perform radiometric and/or spatial analysis. By “image analysis” we understand, however, all kinds of operation performed on images (or sequences of images) in order to extract qualitative or quantitative data, perform measurements and apply statistical analysis. Whereas there are nowadays many books dealing with image processing, only a small number deal with image analysis. The methods and techniques involved in these fields of course have a wide range of applications in our daily world: industrial vision, material imaging, medical imaging, biological imaging, multimedia applications, satellite imaging, quality control, traffic control, and so on

Book Synopsis Computer Imaging by : Scott E Umbaugh

Download or read book Computer Imaging written by Scott E Umbaugh. This book was released on 2005-01-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Imaging: Digital Image Analysis and Processing brings together analysis and processing in a unified framework, providing a valuable foundation for understanding both computer vision and image processing applications. Taking an engineering approach, the text integrates theory with a conceptual and application-oriented style, allowing you to immediately understand how each topic fits into the overall structure of practical application development. Divided into five major parts, the book begins by introducing the concepts and definitions necessary to understand computer imaging. The second part describes image analysis and provides the tools, concepts, and models required to analyze digital images and develop computer vision applications. Part III discusses application areas for the processing of images, emphasizing human visual perception. Part IV delivers the information required to apply a CVIPtools environment to algorithm development. The text concludes with appendices that provide supplemental imaging information and assist with the programming exercises found in each chapter. The author presents topics as needed for understanding each practical imaging model being studied. This motivates the reader to master the topics and also makes the book useful as a reference. The CVIPtools software integrated throughout the book, now in a new Windows version, provides practical examples and encourages you to conduct additional exploration via tutorials and programming exercises provided with each chapter.
