Book Synopsis Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures by : Jorgen Fredsoe

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe. This book was released on 1997-03-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Book Synopsis Water-tunnel Study of Transition Flow Around Circular Cylinders by : D. Almosnino

Download or read book Water-tunnel Study of Transition Flow Around Circular Cylinders written by D. Almosnino. This book was released on 1984. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently reported phenomenon of asymmetric flow separation form a circular cylinder in the critical Reynolds number regime has been confirmed in a water-tunnel experiment. For the first time, an attempt was made to visualize the wake of the cylinder during the transition from subcritical to critical flow and to correlate the visualizations with lift and drag measurements. The occurrence of the dominant asymmetric-flow state was quite repeatable, both when increasing and decreasing the Reynolds number, resulting in a mean lift coefficient of C sub l approx = to 1.2 and a shift in the angle of the wake by about 12 deg. A distinctive step change in the drag and shedding frequency was also found to occur. A hysteresis was confirmed to exist in this region as the Reynolds number was cycled over the transition range. Both boundaries of the asymmetry appear to be supercritical bifurcations in the flow. The asymmetry was normally steady in the mean; however, there were instances when the direction of the asymmetry reversed and remained so for the duration of the Reynolds number sweep through this transition region. A second asymmetry was observed at a higher Reynolds number; however the mean lift coefficient was much lower, and the direction of the asymmetry was not observed to reverse. Introducing a small local disturbance into the boundary layer was found to prevent the critical asymmetry from developing along the entire span of the cylinder. (Author).

Book Synopsis Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities by : Helmut Eckelmann

Download or read book Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities written by Helmut Eckelmann. This book was released on 2014-10-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bluff-body wakes play an important role in many fluid dynamics problems and engineering applications. This book gives and up-to-date account of recent results obtained in the study of bluff-body wakes. Experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches are all comprehensively covered and compared. Topics of particular interest include hydrodynamic instability analyses, three-dimensional pattern formation problems, flow control methods, bifurcation analyses, numerical simulations and turbulence modelling. The main originality of thisvolume is that recent conceptual advances made to describe nonlinear phenomena in general are put to the test on a classical problem in fundamental fluid mechanics, namely the wake structure generated behind a bluff object.

Book Synopsis Integrability, Self-duality, and Twistor Theory by : Lionel J. Mason

Download or read book Integrability, Self-duality, and Twistor Theory written by Lionel J. Mason. This book was released on 1996. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the familiar integrable systems of equations are symmetry reductions of self-duality equations on a metric or on a Yang-Mills connection. For example, the Korteweg-de Vries and non-linear Schrodinger equations are reductions of the self-dual Yang-Mills equation. This book explores in detail the connections between self-duality and integrability, and also the application of twistor techniques to integrable systems. It supports two central theories: that the symmetries of self-duality equations provide a natural classification scheme for integrable systems; and that twistor theory provides a uniform geometric framework for the study of Backlund transformations, the inverse scattering method, and other such general constructions of integrability theory. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematical physics.
