Book Synopsis Fixing Columbine by : Doriane Lambelet Coleman

Download or read book Fixing Columbine written by Doriane Lambelet Coleman. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fixing Columbine uses the 1999 school shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, as a metaphor for the much larger, and largely silent, epidemic of childhood dysfunction that has swept the nation in the last thirty years, claiming as its victims approximately 15 to 25 million American children annually. Using both a child development lens and comparative analysis, the book first describes the causes of the epidemic which include--for the affected children--absent adults, toxic media exposures, dysfunctional peers, and an anti-social educational environment. It then tackles the question how to fix it. The book argues that classical liberal principles as represented in the constitutional doctrines of parental autonomy and free speech simultaneously enabled the epidemic and impede the most obvious law-based solutions. It concludes with a partial answer in the public schools as they perform their original and still-salient communitarian function.

Book Synopsis Comprehending Columbine by : Ralph W Larkin

Download or read book Comprehending Columbine written by Ralph W Larkin. This book was released on 2007-01-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 20, 1999, two Colorado teenagers went on a shooting rampage at Columbine High School. That day, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve fellow students and a teacher, as well as wounding twenty-four other people, before they killed themselves. Although there have been other books written about the tragedy, this is the first serious, impartial investigation into the cultural, environmental, and psychological causes of the massacre.Based on first-hand interviews and a thorough reading of the relevant literature, Ralph Larkin examines the complex of factors that led the two young men to plan and carry out their deed. For Harris and Klebold, Larkin concludes, the carnage was an act of revenge against the "jocks" who had harassed and humiliated them, retribution against evangelical students who acted as if they were morally superior, an acting out of the mythology of right-wing paramilitary organization members to "die in a blaze of glory," and a deep desire for notoriety.Rather than simply looking at Columbine as a crucible for all school violence, Larkin places the tragedy in its proper context, and in doing so, examines its causes and meaning.

Book Synopsis Educational Change by : Clifford H. Edwards

Download or read book Educational Change written by Clifford H. Edwards. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Clifford H. Edwards presents a convincing case for the power of learning communities to more genuinely reflect the nature of the broader American society and to more authentically empower students as learners. How else can it be than the means necessarily being consistent with the ends? `Shades of John Dewey,' you might say! Yes, but more validly, the research findings of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky are extensively actualized---that is, knowledge is constructed by the individual child/learner while immersed in a social context, whether family or school. Traditional education has always ignored how children truly learn, resulting in very limited learning outcomes---while the classroom itself has often been a scene of contrary wills between teacher and student."---Lary M. Arnoldsen, EdD, emeritus professor of secondary education, Brigham Young University --
