Book excerpt: As incredible as it may seem in this hyper-connected, technologically advanced era, half the planet's population exist as "Financial nomads"-those who nourish and shelter themselves without using traditional banking services. While the wealthy live at the top of a metaphorical pyramid, taking financial security and banking services for granted, there are billions of people who struggle at the pyramid's base in an exhausting state of financial exclusion and insecurity. Times are changing rapidly, but despite global uncertainty, technology has the capacity to reach and equip people in all walks of life. Advances in communications have reconfigured the ease with which we interact with our money-and these advances can provide innovative financial services to the unbanked and underserved around the world. Financial inclusion for all is indeed within our reach, and with this conviction, authors Karl Mehta and Carol Realini propose a vision for a better world and a blueprint to get there....

Book Synopsis What Drives Financial Inclusion at the Bottom of the Pyramid? Empirical Evidence from Microfinance Panel Data by : Catalina Martínez Gutiérrez

Download or read book What Drives Financial Inclusion at the Bottom of the Pyramid? Empirical Evidence from Microfinance Panel Data written by Catalina Martínez Gutiérrez. This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance has played a key role in including the poor in financial markets. This paper uses microfinance data to approximate financial inclusion in the poorer segments of the population and proposes a quantile regression approach to study the development of microfinance markets. Our approach accounts for the dynamic and heterogeneous impacts that key drivers may have across different stages of market development. It also allows us to go beyond correlations and gets us closer to identifying causal relationships. Our key findings indicate that: i) Microfinance markets are more responsive to the needs of the bottom of the pyramid than to potential growth opportunities. ii) Enabling institutions that provide credit information become increasingly important with higher market complexity. iii) Formal financial development is a complement of microfinance development. iv) Technologies can help to overcome market entry barriers, and to enable a higher inclusion in markets with a high degree of complexity. Our results could help policymakers and investors better understand and influence financial inclusion at the bottom of the pyramid across different stages of market development.

Download or read book Using the Base of the Pyramid Strategy as Lens for Cross-Sector Collaboration in Financial Inclusion written by Mostafa Mohamad. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile Financial service is one of the cutting edge movements to bank the unbanked by integrating donor and enterprise market approaches for financial inclusion. In this paper, we address how to integrate Donors-Led Value Chain and Enterprises-Led Value Chain to get a sustainable impact on the unbanked micro-entrepreneurs. However, each has advantages and disadvantages as they go along the stages of design, implementation, and sustainability. Using the BoP perspective, we argue that the Bottom of the Pyramid Value Chain mixes up the relatively high start up capabilities of Donor-Led Value Chain with the relatively wider impact of Enterprise-Led Value Chain. Further, it enables both donors and enterprises to develop a reconciled balanced scorecard to collect relevant and up-to-date information about economic returns, social benefits and local impact. Such integration guarantees flexible long term investments and help innovating new services.

Download or read book Financial Inclusion - A Tool to Uplift People at 'Bottom of Pyramid' (BOP). written by Anubha Vashisht. This book was released on 2018. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India it has been observed the weaker section has always been kept away from the banking fold because of their lower income and poor banking awareness. The weaker section is always in dearth of credit facilities at affordable cost and at the time of their need. The Indian Financial System is considered to be one of the best in the world yet the financial awareness and the availability of financial services is very less in the rural parts of India and especially to the weaker section, globally referred to as 'bottom of Pyramid'. This segment needs financial assistance in order to sail them out of their conditions of poverty. Financial inclusion is intended to connect people to banks with consequential benefits. Financial Inclusion includes credit facilities, financial awareness, and knowledge about banking facilities and most importantly makes them financially literate. This paper intends to study the role of financial inclusion in bringing social change and alleviating poverty. It will study the measures taken by banks in rural areas to uplift the weaker segment and study the perception of the target segment regarding these measures. And lastly to suggest a model that will increase the efficiency of banks in this regard.
