Book excerpt: Enhanced forest management (EFM) is undertaken to increase the productivity of stands above that of unmanaged stands or stands managed to meet basic forest management standards. In 1995, a joint Alberta government-industry task force was established to recommend a comprehensive policy framework that would complement the Alberta Forest Conservation Strategy and facilitate implementation of EFM. The task force identified seven areas that an Alberta EFM program should address. This report describes specific issues, along with recommendations on how they should be addressed, in each of these areas: resource planning, public consultation, estimating baseline stand productivity, quantifying potential gains from EFM, guidelines for determining allowable annual cut, implementation and monitoring, and tenure and stumpage assessment. The appendix includes a table of estimates of potential yield improvements using EFM and an example of wood supply dynamics from New Brunswick.
