Book excerpt: Between the 1890s and the 1930s, movie going became an established feature of everyday life across America. Movies constituted an enormous visual data bank and changed the way artist and public alike interpreted images. This book explores modern painting as a response to, and an appropriation of, the aesthetic possibilities pried open by cinema from its invention until the outbreak of World War II, when both the art world and the film industry changed substantially. Artists were watching movies, filmmakers studied fine arts; the membrane between media was porous, allowing for fluid exchange. Each chapter focuses on a suite of films and paintings, broken down into facets and then reassembled to elucidate the distinctive art–film nexus at successive historic moments.

Book Synopsis Projected Art History by : Doris Berger

Download or read book Projected Art History written by Doris Berger. This book was released on 2015-11-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biopics on artists have an enormous effect on the popular understanding of what it means to be an artist. Projected Art History highlights the narrative structure and images created in the film genre of biopics, in which the artist's life is being dramatized and embodied by an actor. Doris Berger bridges a gap between art history, film studies and popular culture by investigating how the film genre of biopics adapts written biographies and projects art history for a mass audience. Berger offers an analytical approach by concentrating on the two case studies Basquiat (1996) and Pollock (2000), but also looks at larger issues at play, such as how postwar American art history is being mediated in a popular format such as the biopic. This is the first book to identify the functionality of the biopic film genre and showcase its implication for a popular art history that is projected on the big screen"--
