Book excerpt: The opinions expressed in this publication, however, are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the NCCAH. [...] For example, in the American context, American women have substantially lower rates of alcohol consumption relative to the rest of the world, yet the incidence of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) in the United States may be the highest in the world (Abel, 1998a). [...] On the other hand, the epidemiological evidence is inconclusive not only about the incidence of FAS and the broader umbrella of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in Aboriginal communities, but also the Canadian population as a whole. [...] Beginning with an overview of currently-accepted definitions, the review then moves to diagnostic criteria; basics of incidence and prevalence and difficulties in the measurement of FAS and FASD; prevalence in the general population; and an overview of prevalence in Aboriginal populations. [...] Although there is consistency in terms of the components of the syndrome, small variations in definitions may lead to substantial over-and-under-ascertainment of cases, which in turn affect estimates of prevalence of FAS.
