Book Synopsis Extraterrestrial Languages by : Daniel Oberhaus

Download or read book Extraterrestrial Languages written by Daniel Oberhaus. This book was released on 2024-05-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we send a message into space, will extraterrestrial beings receive it? Will they understand? The endlessly fascinating question of whether we are alone in the universe has always been accompanied by another, more complicated one: if there is extraterrestrial life, how would we communicate with it? In this book, Daniel Oberhaus leads readers on a quest for extraterrestrial communication. Exploring Earthlings' various attempts to reach out to non-Earthlings over the centuries, he poses some not entirely answerable questions: If we send a message into space, will extraterrestrial beings receive it? Will they understand? What languages will they (and we) speak? Is there not only a universal grammar (as Noam Chomsky has posited), but also a grammar of the universe? Oberhaus describes, among other things, a late-nineteenth-century idea to communicate with Martians via Morse code and mirrors; the emergence in the twentieth century of SETI (the search for extraterrestrial intelligence), CETI (communication with extraterrestrial intelligence), and finally METI (messaging extraterrestrial intelligence); the one-way space voyage of Ella, an artificial intelligence agent that can play cards, tell fortunes, and recite poetry; and the launching of a theremin concert for aliens. He considers media used in attempts at extraterrestrial communication, from microwave systems to plaques on spacecrafts to formal logic, and discusses attempts to formulate a language for our message, including the Astraglossa and two generations of Lincos (lingua cosmica). The chosen medium for interstellar communication reveals much about the technological sophistication of the civilization that sends it, Oberhaus observes, but even more interesting is the information embedded in the message itself. In Extraterrestrial Languages, he considers how philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, science, and art have informed the design or limited the effectiveness of our interstellar messaging.

Book Synopsis Extraterrestrial Linguistics by : Frederick Dodson

Download or read book Extraterrestrial Linguistics written by Frederick Dodson. This book was released on 2020-10-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using linguistics, this book proves the following: Aliens Are Us.The "Ancient Aliens" you hear about everywhere are not Aliens, they are humans. The origins of all people and cultures is in outer-space, particularly the Pleiades. Planet Earth is a low-frequency realm that has caused us to forget who we are and where we are from. There is a common ancient language of all humanity. This language is best preserved in ancient German. You will learn some of the language that helps you decode and understand many "mysteries": The real purpose of the Pyramids, how Stonehenge was built, the meaning of the Voynich manuscript, why the CIA published books on UFOs in the 1950s, where tales of "fairies" really come from, the names and locations of the stars we come from, why the ancients did interstellar flight at solstice, how ancient astronauts sexually exploited earthlings and many more strange things. All of this information is encoded across the languages of the Aborigines, the Maori, the Basque and Estonian languages, Sanskrit, Hebrew and many more. This is sure to be one of the most unique books you have ever read.

Book excerpt: Xenolinguistics brings together biologists, anthropologists, linguists, and other experts specializing in language and communication to explore what non-human, non-Earthbound language might look like. The 18 chapters examine what is known about human language and animal communication systems to provide reasonable hypotheses about what we may find if we encounter non-Earth intelligence. Showcasing an interdisciplinary dialogue between a set of highly established scholars, this volume: Clarifies what is and is not known about human language and animal communication systems Presents speculative arguments as a philosophical exercise to help define the boundaries of what our current science can tell us about non-speculative areas of investigation Provides readers with a clearer sense of the how our knowledge about language is better informed through a cross-disciplinary investigation Offers a better understanding of future avenues of research on language This rich interdisciplinary collection will be of interest to researchers and students studying non-human communication, astrobiology, and language invention.

Book Synopsis Astrolinguistics by : Alexander Ollongren

Download or read book Astrolinguistics written by Alexander Ollongren. This book was released on 2012-11-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In linguistics, one of the main areas of modern research involves the capabilities and possibilities of there being a "lingua cosmica," a LINCOS, a universal language that could be used to communicate with non-human intelligences. This book touches on the area of the development and use of a "lingua universalis" for interstellar communication, but it also presents concepts that cover a broad area of linguistics. Chomsky's paradigm on universal properties of natural languages, for a long time a leading general theory of natural languages, includes the strong assumption that humans are born with some kind of universals stored in their brains. Are there universals of this kind of language used by intelligent beings and societies elsewhere in the universe? We do not know whether such languages exist. It seems to be impossible to determine, simply because the universe is too large for an exhaustive search. Even verification will be hard to obtain, without quite a bit of luck. This book uses astrolinguistic principles in message construction and is helpful in clarifying and giving perspective to discussions on existential questions such as these.
