Book excerpt: The psychiatric survivor movement is an international political movement dedicated to fighting for human rights in the mental health system. People who identify as "psychiatric survivors" have experienced human rights abuses and oppression within the mental health system. In grassroots advocacy and peer-support groups, psychiatric survivors support one another as they heal from iatrogenic trauma, and also engage in activism efforts, creating and operating alternatives to traditional mental health services. A small number of psychiatric survivors have chosen to re-enter the system as mental health professionals, and the current project focuses on the experiences of people with this dual-identity. The first goal for the project is that it helps to facilitate further dialogues between psychologists and the psychiatric survivor movement by exploring the implications of identifying with both discourses. The second goal is to engage in a process of researcher reflexivity, and in doing so, better understand my evolving identity as a therapist and ally of the survivor movement. Lastly, by exploring the experiences of people with a survivor-therapist dual identity, I will discuss how mental health professionals and survivors may work together to come to some shared understandings about the role of therapy and the nature of alternatives to the mental health system in the future. To accomplish these goals, I interviewed five survivor-therapists, asking how their identities as psychiatric survivors influences their approaches to therapy, as well as the nature of the relationship between these two identities. The participants consistently spoke to the foundational nature of their survivor identities in their work as mental health professionals. Some spoke about how their therapeutic approach is based upon how they would have wanted to have been treated themselves, while others talked about emulating the qualities of caring nurses and doctors they encountered during their hospitalizations. Each of the participants had a nuanced view of their roles in the mental health system and the survivor movement, and brought complex perspectives on issues such as the use of psychiatric drugs, diagnosis, and the role of the therapy relationship in the healing process.

Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to critical existential-analytic psychotherapy. It has been written as a response to what is considered to be a crisis point in what is currently taken as psychotherapeutic knowledge. A focus point is the relentless move in psychotherapy and psychotherapy trainings towards evidence-based practice. It is suggested that such developments can be usefully challenged if we are to consider: Can starting with theory be a form of violence? Should a primacy be given to practice? Does reliance on empirical research mean we start from the wrong place? From a critical existential-analytic psychotherapeutic perspective, the answer to all three of these questions is ‘yes’. This perspective, therefore, is fundamentally different from what psychological therapists are increasingly purporting to do, and further challenges other current notions from diagnosis and treatment to dominant discourses in psychology. The aim of this book is to consider some ways in which the psychological therapies might be able to move away from the crisis mainly caused by what is currently wrongly being understood in terms of ‘evidence-based practice’ as the nature of psychotherapeutic knowledge. Instead, it is proposed that primacy be given to: practice, considering theories having implications rather than applications, and privileging thoughtfulness with notions of research being seen more as cultural practices. This book is based on a special issue of the European Journal of Psychotherapy& Counselling.
