Book excerpt: The phenomenology of the Randall-Sundrum model of localized gravity is analyzed in detail for the two scenarios where the Standard Model (SM) gauge and matte fields are either confined to a TeV scale 3-brane or may propagate in a slice of five dimensional anti-deSitter space. In the latter instance, the authors derive the interactions of the graviton, gauge, and fermion Kaluza-Klein (KK) states. The resulting phenomenological signatures are shown to be highly dependent on the value of the 5-dimensional fermion mass and differ substantially from the case where the SM fields lie on the TeV-brane. In both scenarios, they examine the collider signatures for direct production of the graviton and gauge KK towers as well as their induced contributions to precision electroweak observables. These direct and indirect signatures are found to play a complementary role in the exploration of the model parameter space. In the case where the SM field content resides on the TeV-brane, they show that the LHC can probe the full parameter space and hence will either discover or exclude this model if the scale of electroweak physics on the 3-brane is less than 10 TeV. They also show that spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking of the SM must take place on the TeV-brane.

Book Synopsis Theory and Experiment in Gravitational Physics by : Clifford M. Will

Download or read book Theory and Experiment in Gravitational Physics written by Clifford M. Will. This book was released on 2018-09-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2015 centenary of the publication of Einstein's general theory of relativity, and the first detection of gravitational waves have focused renewed attention on the question of whether Einstein was right. This review of experimental gravity provides a detailed survey of the intensive testing of Einstein's theory of gravity, including tests in the emerging strong-field dynamical regime. It discusses the theoretical frameworks needed to analyze gravitational theories and interpret experiments. Completely revised and updated, this new edition features coverage of new alternative theories of gravity, a unified treatment of gravitational radiation, and the implications of the latest binary pulsar observations. It spans the earliest tests involving the Solar System to the latest tests using gravitational waves detected from merging black holes and neutron stars. It is a comprehensive reference for researchers and graduate students working in general relativity, cosmology, particle physics and astrophysics.

This book was released on 2010-08-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains material from the lecture courses conducted at the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI, Colorado, USA) on high energy physics and cosmology in 2008. Three series of lectures are presented in parallel in the areas of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) phenomenology and experimentation; advanced theoretical topics beyond the standard model; and neutrino oscillation, astroparticle physics and cosmology. The phenomenology lectures cover a broad spectrum of standard research techniques used to interpret present-day and LHC data. The new physics lectures focus on modern speculations about physics beyond the standard model, with an emphasis on supersymmetry, grand unification theories, extra-dimensional theories, and string phenomenology, which may be tested at the LHC. The lecture series on neutrino physics, astroparticle physics and cosmology treats recent developments in neutrino oscillations, theories and searches of dark matter and dark energy, cosmic microwave background radiation, and density perturbation theory. The lectures are of pedagogical nature in presentation, and are accessible to advanced graduate students and researchers in high energy physics and cosmology.

Book Synopsis Advances in Jet Substructure at the LHC by : Roman Kogler

Download or read book Advances in Jet Substructure at the LHC written by Roman Kogler. This book was released on 2021-05-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.
