Book Synopsis Exercises and Solutions in Biostatistical Theory by : Lawrence Kupper

Download or read book Exercises and Solutions in Biostatistical Theory written by Lawrence Kupper. This book was released on 2010-11-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from nearly four decades of Lawrence L. Kupper’s teaching experiences as a distinguished professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina, Exercises and Solutions in Biostatistical Theory presents theoretical statistical concepts, numerous exercises, and detailed solutions that span topics from basic probability to statistical inference. The text links theoretical biostatistical principles to real-world situations, including some of the authors’ own biostatistical work that has addressed complicated design and analysis issues in the health sciences. This classroom-tested material is arranged sequentially starting with a chapter on basic probability theory, followed by chapters on univariate distribution theory and multivariate distribution theory. The last two chapters on statistical inference cover estimation theory and hypothesis testing theory. Each chapter begins with an in-depth introduction that summarizes the biostatistical principles needed to help solve the exercises. Exercises range in level of difficulty from fairly basic to more challenging (identified with asterisks). By working through the exercises and detailed solutions in this book, students will develop a deep understanding of the principles of biostatistical theory. The text shows how the biostatistical theory is effectively used to address important biostatistical issues in a variety of real-world settings. Mastering the theoretical biostatistical principles described in the book will prepare students for successful study of higher-level statistical theory and will help them become better biostatisticians.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Statistical Process Control by : Peihua Qiu

Download or read book Introduction to Statistical Process Control written by Peihua Qiu. This book was released on 2013-10-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major tool for quality control and management, statistical process control (SPC) monitors sequential processes, such as production lines and Internet traffic, to ensure that they work stably and satisfactorily. Along with covering traditional methods, Introduction to Statistical Process Control describes many recent SPC methods that improve upon the more established techniques. The author—a leading researcher on SPC—shows how these methods can handle new applications. After exploring the role of SPC and other statistical methods in quality control and management, the book covers basic statistical concepts and methods useful in SPC. It then systematically describes traditional SPC charts, including the Shewhart, CUSUM, and EWMA charts, as well as recent control charts based on change-point detection and fundamental multivariate SPC charts under the normality assumption. The text also introduces novel univariate and multivariate control charts for cases when the normality assumption is invalid and discusses control charts for profile monitoring. All computations in the examples are solved using R, with R functions and datasets available for download on the author’s website. Offering a systematic description of both traditional and newer SPC methods, this book is ideal as a primary textbook for a one-semester course in disciplines concerned with process quality control, such as statistics, industrial and systems engineering, and management sciences. It can also be used as a supplemental textbook for courses on quality improvement and system management. In addition, the book provides researchers with many useful, recent research results on SPC and gives quality control practitioners helpful guidelines on implementing up-to-date SPC techniques.
