Book Synopsis Rapid Evaluation of Sediment Budgets by : Leslie M. Reid

Download or read book Rapid Evaluation of Sediment Budgets written by Leslie M. Reid. This book was released on 1996. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many land-management decisions would be aided by an understanding of the current sediment production and transport regime in a watershed and of the likely effects of planned land use on that regime. Sediment budgeting can provide this information quickly and at low cost if reconnaissance techniques are used to evaluate the budget. Efficient budget construction incorporates seven steps: careful definition of the problem to be addressed; collection of background information; subdivision of the project area into uniform sub-areas; interpretation of aerial photographs; fieldwork; analysis; and checking of results. Methods used in field-work and analysis must be selected according to the types of hillslope and channel processes active, the goals of the analysis, and the level of precision required. Methods for evaluating erosion and sediment transport rates are described, and four examples are given to demonstrate budget applications and construction.

Download or read book Application of a Regional Sediment Budget Analysis System for Florida's East Coast written by . This book was released on 2000. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops preliminary regional sediment budgets for the Northeast and Central regions of the East Coast of Florida as part of "proof-in-concept" testing of Version 2 of the Sediment Budget Analysis System (SBAS2000). Features of SBAS2000, a PC-based method for calculating sediment budgets for local and regional extents that may encompass multiple inlets and beaches, are illustrated through the application. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving regional sediment budget analyses.

Book Synopsis Toxicological Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances by : Jamie C. DeWitt

Download or read book Toxicological Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances written by Jamie C. DeWitt. This book was released on 2015-04-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a timely and comprehensive overview of the latest science for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), covering the development of methods for assessing PFASs in biological fluids and tissues as well as the current knowledge regarding their toxicity to vertebrate organisms. This book includes chapters on human and wildlife exposure/body burdens, reviews of metabolism and toxicological effects by organ system/developmental stage and aspects of PFAS toxicity that are driving PFAS research and regulatory oversight. Toxicological Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances provide critical assessments of the most controversial topics surrounding toxicological evaluation of PFASs to give readers an expert perspective on the issues. Emphasis is placed on the integration of modes and mechanisms of action with functional endpoints that are relevant to human and wildlife health. This book will be a useful resource for toxicologists, environmental chemists, risk assessors and researchers with an interest in the class of compounds known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Book Synopsis Natural Attenuation of Chlorinated Solvents, Petroleum Hydrocarbons, and Other Organic Compounds by : Bruce C. Alleman

Download or read book Natural Attenuation of Chlorinated Solvents, Petroleum Hydrocarbons, and Other Organic Compounds written by Bruce C. Alleman. This book was released on 1999. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural attenuation was first demonstrated at sites with hydrocarbon contamination, but recent studies at sites contaminated by chlorinated compounds have shown that this approach often has merit for these more challenging contamination problems. This volume covers natural attenuation in media ranging from deep aquifers to shallow soils, and for contaminants ranging from fuels to solvents to herbicides, and offers the reader a comprehensive overview of case studies that represent the state of the art in natural attenuation approaches to site remediation.
