Download or read book European Citizenship and Identity Outside of the European Union written by Agnieszka Weinar. This book was released on 2019-06-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically engages with the concept of European identity and citizenship, and the role of the European Union in diaspora, membership and emigration policies. It presents original research on European governance of emigration and citizenship and considers European integration in a global context. It questions whether there can be a European diaspora outside the European Union, if European governance of emigration is possible, and whether the EU can or should govern its diasporas in the global era. By engaging with concepts of European citizenship, diaspora and identity, the author examines the weak meaning of Europe for EU nationals living abroad and finds that European public spaces, present and sustained within the European Union territory, are largely not exported outside of it. Equal treatment and equal rights become empty concepts for Europeans leaving the European Union as they lose their European citizenship. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union politics, European studies, migration studies, American and Canadian studies, and the sociology of migration.

Book Synopsis European Identity and Citizenship by : Sanja Ivic

Download or read book European Identity and Citizenship written by Sanja Ivic. This book was released on 2016-06-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a theoretical and empirical approach to explore the philosophies of European citizenship and European identity. The author applies a focused analytical framework to argue that European identity and citizenship should be perceived as postmodern categories which are multi-layered, dynamic and fluid. The book offers a detailed review of political and legal studies which do not comprehend or explain postmodernist concepts of citizenship and identity. In the theoretical part of the book various philosophical models of citizenship and identity (from antiquity to the postmodern era) are portrayed, and the author's own theory and analytical framework is developed. The empirical part of the book discusses a variety of case studies illustrating how European Union policies apply to this framework.

Book Synopsis Citizenship, identity and immigration in the European Union by : Theodora Kostakopoulou

Download or read book Citizenship, identity and immigration in the European Union written by Theodora Kostakopoulou. This book was released on 2024-07-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European citizenship, identity and immigration are constitutive issues facing the European polity and have important consequences for domestic political systems. There has been a great deal published about citizenship within the setting of the nation-state and comparative immigration policies, but relatively little has been written on their theorisation in a post-national, post-statist context, such as the EU, and on alternative European institutional designs. Now available in paperback, this volume blends normative political theory with European integration, and develops an original theoretical framework for European Union citizenship, identity and immigration as well as a set of policy proposals for institutional reform. Challenging the conventionally held views in these areas, the author argues that a constructive model of European citizenship and identity is vital to the construction of a democratic, heterogeneous and inclusive European polity. The book will appeal to academics and political actors concerned with issues of European governance as well as to undergraduate and postgraduate students of European politics, European integration, European Union Law, political theory and sociology.

Book Synopsis Citizenship and Identity in Europe by : Leslie Holmes

Download or read book Citizenship and Identity in Europe written by Leslie Holmes. This book was released on 2018-12-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999. Issues of citizenship and identity have rapidly moved up the European and social science agendas in recent years. This book explores the reason for this. It focuses on the dilemmas of citizenship and identify in the uncertain and unpredictable atmosphere of fin de siècle Europe. In the course of eight essays, it explores the general theoretical issues of citizenship and identity – and the relationship between these – in contemporary Europe; the various aspects of European Union citizenship (two chapters); democracy and multiculturalism in Western Europe; pluralism and citizenship, with particular reference to gender in West European politics; the various implications for gender politics of divorce in Western Europe; exclusion and inclusion in central and Eastern Europe; and the extent to which the idea of a Yugoslav national identity has been a failure. Citizenship and Identity in Europe will appeal both to informed generalists and to students and scholars of Europe who seek analyses of these issues in Eastern, central and Western Europe from a wide range of perspectives. At a time when the future of Europe is looking more uncertain than it has for decades, this book is both timely and thought-provoking.

Book Synopsis Constructing Europe's Identity by : Lars-Erik Cederman

Download or read book Constructing Europe's Identity written by Lars-Erik Cederman. This book was released on 2001. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors assess not only the benefits, but also the costs of attempts to assert a European identity. Referring to debates about the respective merits of deepening and widening, they address the equally important associated tradeoffs between exclusion and dilution: they point to the risks on the one hand of a Europe that excludes foreign goods, immigrants and entire countries, and on the other of an unfocused definition of Europe that may dilute the very values that a "European identity" is intended to protect.
