Book excerpt: Adolescent mental illness is a major concern in the Unites States. The adolescent stage is a critical developmental period of physical and mental changes, thus it is important to understand protective factors associated with positive wellbeing. The current study aimed to explore: (a) the associations among race, gender, ethnic identity, and depressive symptoms among eighth grade adolescents, (b) to what extent are there differences in degree of depressive symptoms among youth based on race and gender, and (c) to what extent a strong sense of ethnic identity serves as a protective factor against the development of depression among youth with different demographic characteristics. Data were collected from participants in the Maryland Adolescent In Context Study (MADICS) when they were in the 8th grade. Findings indicated that race and gender were not significantly associated with depression. Among the current sample identifying as a Black participant was not significantly predictive of symptoms of depression compared to students who identified as White. Girls and boys did not significantly experience depression symptoms differently based on items endorsed on the survey. Additionally, statistical significant interaction effects between race and gender with relation to symptoms of depression were not detected. Finally, youth in the sample who reported higher ethnic identity scores also reported more depression. Implications for school psychologist will be discussed.

Book excerpt: "Previous studies indicate that acculturative stress is associated with greater depressive symptoms in Latino adolescents. Ethnic identity is an important cultural variable that has been linked with positive mental health outcomes. The current study examined whether different aspects of ethnic identity moderated the relation between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms among 7th - 10th graders in an emerging Latino community in North Carolina. First, the study examined the main effects of acculturative stress and ethnic identity on depressive symptoms. As hypothesized, greater acculturative stress predicted greater depressive symptoms. Similarly, as hypothesized, lower public regard predicted greater depressive symptoms. In contrast, private regard/centrality did not significantly predict depressive symptoms. It was also hypothesized that ethnic private regard, public regard, and centrality would moderate the relationship between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms such that youth with high levels of ethnic identity would report lower depressive symptoms when confronting acculturative stress. The results of this current study did not support this moderation hypothesis. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that there would be a three-way interaction in which private regard would moderate the relationship between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms only when youth endorsed high levels of ethnic centrality. Due to the strong correlation between private regard and centrality, a three-way interaction analyses could not be performed. Acculturative stress and public regard were the only factors in the current study that were associated with depressive symptoms."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Synopsis The Relationships Between Ethnic Identity, Social Context, and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents by : Michelle Miller

Download or read book The Relationships Between Ethnic Identity, Social Context, and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents written by Michelle Miller. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic identity is a construct that has been studied for decades in the field of psychology. Much of this literature has focused on contextual factors that may contribute to the development of ethnic identity, as well as how ethnic identity impacts mental health. The purpose of this study was to better understand ethnic identity across different racial and ethnic groups, which social factors are related to ethnic identity in adolescents, and the relationship between ethnic identity and adolescent depression. In a sample of 186 adolescents, ethnic identity was higher in Hispanic youth than Black, Non-Hispanic or White, Non-Hispanic youth. Greater parental support and feelings of school connectedness were predictive of concurrent ethnic identity; parental conflict was not significantly associated with ethnic identity. Ethnic identity did not significantly predict concurrent depressive symptoms. This study highlights the importance of positive social relationships in the development of adolescent ethnic identity. Future research should incorporate general measures of well-being to better understand the relationship between ethnic identity and mental health during adolescence.

Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. This book was released on 2019-07-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

This study proposes that identity commitment, exploration, and continuity will be associated with positive psychological and behavioural outcomes for adolescents. This title will be of interest to students of sociology, psychology and urban studies.
