Book Synopsis Estimating Catch Weight of Reef Fish Species Using Estimation and Intercept Data from the Hawaii Marine Recreational Fishing Survey by : Ivor Douglas Williams

Download or read book Estimating Catch Weight of Reef Fish Species Using Estimation and Intercept Data from the Hawaii Marine Recreational Fishing Survey written by Ivor Douglas Williams. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The goal of the work covered in this report was to use information gathered by NOAA's Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) to generate reef fish catch estimates during the years 2004-2011 in Hawaii. The goal is to provide an explicit and transparent means to generate substitution weights (i.e., a mean weight per fish caught per taxon and fishing mode) for MRIP expansion records that include estimated harvest (number of fish caught) but not estimated catch weight"--Objectives and background.

Book Synopsis Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management by : Jason S. Link

Download or read book Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management written by Jason S. Link. This book was released on 2022-01-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By examining a suite of over 90 indicators for nine major U.S. fishery ecosystem jurisdictions, Link and Marshak systematically track the progress the U.S. has made toward advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) and making it an operational reality. Covering a range of socioeconomic, governance, environmental forcing, major pressures, systems ecology, and fisheries criteria, they evaluate progress toward EBFM in the U.S., covering a wide range of longitude, latitude, and parts of major ocean basins, representing over 10% of the world’s ocean surface area. They view progress toward the implementation of EBFM as synonymous with improved management of living marine resources in general, and highlight lessons learned from a national perspective. Although US-centric, the lessons learned are applicable for all parts of the global ocean. Though much work remains, significant progress has been made to better address many of the challenges facing the sustainable management of our living marine resources"--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Coral Reef Fishes by : Peter F. Sale

Download or read book Coral Reef Fishes written by Peter F. Sale. This book was released on 2006-07-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral Reef Fishes is the successor of The Ecology of Fishes on Coral Reefs. This new edition includes provocative reviews covering the major areas of reef fish ecology. Concerns about the future health of coral reefs, and recognition that reefs and their fishes are economically important components of the coastal oceans of many tropical nations, have led to enormous growth in research directed at reef fishes. This book is much more than a simple revision of the earlier volume; it is a companion that supports and extends the earlier work. The included syntheses provides readers with the current highlights in this exciting science. * An up-to-date review of key research areas in reef fish ecology, with a bibliography including hundreds of citations, most from the last decade * Authoritative and provocative chapters written to suggest future research priorities * Includes discussions of regulation of fish populations, dispersal or site fidelity of larval reef fishes, sensory and motor capabilities of reef fish larvae, and complexities of management of reef species and communities

Book Synopsis Amendment 5 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Dolphin and Wahoo Fishery for the Atlantic by : Brian Cheuvront

Download or read book Amendment 5 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Dolphin and Wahoo Fishery for the Atlantic written by Brian Cheuvront. This book was released on 2014. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Recreational catch estimates for dolphin and wahoo in the Comprehensive Annual Catch Limit (ACL) Amendment and its integrated Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) (SAFMC 2011a), which included Amendment 3 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Dolphin and Wahoo Fishery of the Atlantic (Dolphin Wahoo FMP) were computed using data generated by the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS). Following an independent review by the National Research Council and a mandate from Congress, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) replaced MRFSS with the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) to provide more accurate recreational catch estimates. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (South Atlantic Council) stated in the Comprehensive ACL Amendment that they would take action as needed, via plan amendment or framework amendment, to revise the appropriate values, in 2012 and beyond. MRIP methods have been used to recalculate previous MRFSS estimates dating back to 2004, and will be the basis for all new estimates moving forward. Therefore, Amendment 5 to the Dolphin Wahoo FMP (Dolphin Wahoo Amendment 5) considers these revisions. The revisions are necessary because if the acceptable biological catch (ABC), ACL, and recreational annual catch target (ACT) values are not updated with the new MRIP estimates, ACLs would be based on MRFSS data while the landings being used to track the ACLs would be estimated using MRIP data. This would result in inconsistencies in the how ACLs are calculated versus how they are monitored. In addition to MRIP data, ACLs would be updated to include revisions to commercial and for-hire landings data. The changes in data impacts the allocations to the commercial and recreational sectors for dolphin and wahoo; however, because the underlying formula used to establish the allocations remains unchanged from what was implemented previously in the Comprehensive ACL Amendment, the magnitude of change is very small. Using MRIP values to estimate recreational landings, as well as updates to headboat and commercial landings represent the best available data and are therefore, in accordance with National Standard 2 of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson-Stevens Act)"--Summary.
