Book Synopsis Essential Mathematics for the Physical Sciences, Volume 1 by : Brett Borden

Download or read book Essential Mathematics for the Physical Sciences, Volume 1 written by Brett Borden. This book was released on 2017-10-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics is expressed in the language of mathematics; it is deeply ingrained in how physics is taught and how it's practiced. A study of the mathematics used in science is thus asound intellectual investment for training as scientists and engineers. This first volume of two is centered on methods of solving partial differential equations (PDEs) and the special functions introduced. Solving PDEs can't be done, however, outside of the context in which they apply to physical systems. The solutions to PDEs must conform to boundary conditions, a set of additional constraints in space or time to be satisfied at the boundaries of the system, that small part of the universe under study. The first volume is devoted to homogeneous boundary-value problems (BVPs), homogeneous implying a system lacking a forcing function, or source function. The second volume takes up (in addition to other topics) inhomogeneous problems where, in addition to the intrinsic PDE governing a physical field, source functions are an essential part of the system. This text is based on a course offered at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and while produced for NPS needs, it will serve other universities well. It is based on the assumption that it follows a math review course, and was designed to coincide with the second quarter of student study, which is dominated by BVPs but also requires an understanding of special functions and Fourier analysis.

Book Synopsis Essential Mathematics and Statistics for Science by : Dr. Graham Currell

Download or read book Essential Mathematics and Statistics for Science written by Dr. Graham Currell. This book was released on 2005-10-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Mathematics and Statistics for Science is a low-level introduction to the essential techniques students need to understand. It assumes little prior knowledge, and adopts a gentle approach that leads through examples in the book and website. No other text provides this range of educational support for science students. The integration between book and website provides study options that would be impossible through a book alone, and allows students to study in ways that suit their own circumstances and preferences. The combination of book and website also provides ready-prepared material for lectures, tutorials and computer practicals. Tutors can use the material to develop a variety of coherent programme using different learning styles. The book develops the mathematics and statistics through examples and questions that reflect the scientific context, and has succeeded in being relevant to a range of undergraduate science programmes.

Book Synopsis Mathematics and Technology by : Christiane Rousseau

Download or read book Mathematics and Technology written by Christiane Rousseau. This book was released on 2008-10-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the student to numerous modern applications of mathematics in technology. The authors write with clarity and present the mathematics in a clear and straightforward way making it an interesting and easy book to read. Numerous exercises at the end of every section provide practice and reinforce the material in the chapter. An engaging quality of this book is that the authors also present the mathematical material in a historical context and not just the practical one. Mathematics and Technology is intended for undergraduate students in mathematics, instructors and high school teachers. Additionally, its lack of calculus centricity as well as a clear indication of the more difficult topics and relatively advanced references make it suitable for any curious individual with a decent command of high school math.
