Book excerpt: While ion-beam techniques have been used to create thin films in the semiconductor industry for several decades, these methods have been too costly for other surface treatment applications. However, as manufacturing devices become increasingly smaller, the use of a directed-energy ion beam is finding novel industrial applications that require the custom tailoring of new materials and devices, including magnetic storage devices, photonics, opto-electronics, and molecular transport. Engineering Thin Films and Nanostructures with Ion Beams offers a thorough narrative of the recent advances that make this technology relevant to current and future applications. Featuring internationally recognized researchers, the book compiles their expertise in a multidimensional source that: Highlights the mechanisms and visual evidence of the effects of single-ion impacts on metallic surfaces Considers how ion-beam techniques can help achieve higher disk-drive densities Introduces gas-cluster ion-beam technology and reviews its precedents Explains how ion beams are used to aggregate metals and semiconductors into nanoclusters with nonlinear optical properties Addresses current challenges in building equipment needed to produce nanostructures in an industrial setting Examines the combination of ion-beam techniques, particularly with physical vapor deposition Delineates the fabrication of nanopillars, nanoflowers, and interconnected nanochannels in three dimensions by using atomic shadowing techniques Illustrates the production of nanopores of varying dimensions in polymer films, alloys, and superconductors using ion-beam irradiation Shows how fingerprints can be made more reliable as forensic evidence by recoil-mixing them into the substrate using ion beams From the basics of the ion-beam modification of materials to state-of-the-art applications, Engineering Th

Book Synopsis Ion Beams in Nanoscience and Technology by : Ragnar Hellborg

Download or read book Ion Beams in Nanoscience and Technology written by Ragnar Hellborg. This book was released on 2009-11-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energetic ion beam irradiation is the basis of a wide plethora of powerful research- and fabrication-techniques for materials characterisation and processing on a nanometre scale. Materials with tailored optical, magnetic and electrical properties can be fabricated by synthesis of nanocrystals by ion implantation, focused ion beams can be used to machine away and deposit material on a scale of nanometres and the scattering of energetic ions is a unique and quantitative tool for process development in high speed electronics and 3-D nanostructures with extreme aspect radios for tissue engineering and nano-fluidics lab-on-a-chip may be machined using proton beams. This book will benefit practitioners, researchers and graduate students working in the field of ion beams and application and more generally everyone concerned with the broad field of nanoscience and technology.

Book Synopsis Nanostructured Thin Films and Nanodispersion Strengthened Coatings by : Andrey A. Voevodin

Download or read book Nanostructured Thin Films and Nanodispersion Strengthened Coatings written by Andrey A. Voevodin. This book was released on 2006-04-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains proceedings of the NATO-Russia Advanced Research Workshop on Nanostructured Thin Films and Nanodispersion Strengthened Coatings (December, 2003, Moscow). During this Workshop leading researchers from twelve countries had presented and discussed most recent developments in the fields of plasma physics and surface engineering related to the preparation and applications of nanostructured thin films and nanodispersion strengthened coatings. These presentations are encompassed in 31 individual chapters. The chapters are assembled in five parts in according to the workshop sessions. Part I is a compilation of chapters on hard and tribological coatings. The recent advances in this area are significant in that it is now possible to engineer strong, hard, and tough coatings that can operate at temperatures higher than 1200 ?C and exhibit ‘smart’, adaptive characteristics. These coatings are based on an amorphous matrix, e. g. nitrides, carbides, borides, or carbon, in which there is a controlled nucleation and growth of ultra hard nanoparticles of crystalline carbides, nitrides, borides and oxides. The critical feature is the control of both the particle size, i. e. , less than 10 nm, and interpartical spacing of a few nanometers. The ‘smart’ or adaptive characteristic is engineered into the nanostructures using similar sized (less than 10 nm) particles of metallic chalcogenidese, ductile metals, or glass forming elements to provide high lubricity and chemical adaptation at the environment change, e. g. , high and low humidities and temperatures.

Book Synopsis Embedded Metal Nanoparticles by Ion Beam Mixing by : Jai Prakash

Download or read book Embedded Metal Nanoparticles by Ion Beam Mixing written by Jai Prakash. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last many year, ion beam implantation/irradiation has played an important role in fundamental studies and in development of new technologies as well. The present book includes the work exploring the use of ion beams in nanotechnology. Ion beam irradiation has become an unique tool for fabricating and engineering the nanostructures not only at the surface but also embedded in the matrix. This work includes the use of ion beams ranging from low energy (keV) to high energy (MeV)to fabricate and engineering the properties of metal nanopartices embedded in polymer matrix. This book, thus, provides the basic understanding of ion beam interaction with materials, chemical and physical modifications of materials, synthesis of nanopartices and tailoring of their properties in thin films.
