Book excerpt: Hoy en día las economías industrializadas se caracterizan entre otras cosas por el uso generalizado de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC), las cuales suponen la incorporación del conocimiento a la actividad económica. La incorporación del conocimiento a la actividad económica no es algo nuevo, desde la segunda revolución industrial hay una vinculación entre el conocimiento científico y las tecnologías productivas pero, sin embargo, las TIC forman la base de una nueva revolución ya que las propias TIC son conocimiento y se utilizan con el fin de generar el propio conocimiento. En el presente estudio, analizaremos en primer lugar el marco teórico de la Economía del Conocimiento, con el fin de conocer la evolución llevada a cabo desde la economía industrial hasta llegar a la nueva economía del conocimiento. En segundo lugar, abordaremos las tecnologías digitales y las transformaciones de valor de la actividad empresarial causadas por el uso de las TIC, estudiando el conjunto de transformaciones de la actividad empresarial, así como el paso de la red de empresas a la nueva empresa red. Finalmente, realizaremos un estudio sobre el uso que las empresas pueden hacer, en este nuevo contexto de economía del conocimiento, de las herramientas digitales y las redes sociales con el fin de potenciar su negocio diferenciándose del resto de empresas. Book excerpt: The study questions whether, after a decade of remarkable progress in trade reform, Latin America and the Caribbean really integrates into the global market, offering a promising rapid growth, and good jobs for its workers. For despite the incidence of the loosely called "knowledge economy", the concern prevails that most countries' rich natural resources, still are the determining factor for exports. Policy recommendations include fostering openness to trade, market access, and foreign direct investment flows, in addition to building human capital, institutions, and public infrastructure, without disregarding the natural advantages. To this end, policymakers should aim at developing educational systems that provide quality education, focused on lifelong learning, and training activities to build human capital. Emphasis should follow on research and development (R&D) incentives, and innovations systems, arguing that countries should experiment with taxation incentives, and subsidies to promote both private, and public investments in R&D, (dependent on the institutional capacity of governments to enforce tax laws, and monitor the quality of investments). Moreover, evidence in this report, suggests that information, and communications technology (ICT) can reduce coordination costs, enabling an effective industrialization, and market access.
