Book Synopsis Feminist Eschatology by : Emily Pennington

Download or read book Feminist Eschatology written by Emily Pennington. This book was released on 2016-08-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many feminist theologians have made timely and valuable contributions to rethinking the eschaton by framing it as cyclical and by embracing endings as they are experienced by present relational, fluid, and sensuous bodies. However, any sense of eschatological finality or ultimacy has either been rejected or ignored. Feminist Eschatology seeks to think differently about Christian eschatology in light of contributions from feminist theologians, noting the numerous and varied critiques they have made of traditional models. These critiques are identified as being directed towards three key claims: eschatology is understood to be actuated by a domineering God, populated by masculinised beings, and disassociated from present lives. Using a form of strategic feminism, wherein traits associated with female bodies, and some women's experiences of their bodies, are used to rethink the end-time of the eschaton, this book contributes to the meaning and significance of both bodies and eschatology.

Book Synopsis Goddess and God in the World by : Carol P. Christ

Download or read book Goddess and God in the World written by Carol P. Christ. This book was released on 2016-08-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Goddess and God in the World, leading theologians Carol P. Christ and Judith Plaskow debate the nature of divinity, proposing a new method called embodied theology. They agree that the transcendent, omnipotent male God of traditional theology must be reimagined. Carol proposes that Goddess is the intelligent embodied love that is in all being. Judith counters that God is an impersonal power of creativity that includes both good and evil. Rooting their views in experience and questioning each other, they offer a fruitful model of theological conversation across difference.

Book excerpt: Rethinking the Christian faith from a woman's perspective has been an important advancement in modern theology. This book introduces the methods, ideas, and contributions of recent feminist theology to readers encountering the subject for the first time. Natalie Watson explores the historical background of feminist theology, discusses the value of reading Scripture from a feminist perspective, and shows how this approach can offer a critical, creative, and constructive rereading of the Christian tradition. She also sets forth some fresh ideas encouraging people to see feminism not as a threat to the church but as a challenging perspective that actually enhances its life in today's world. An extensive annotated bibliography invites readers to further study, presenting a wealth of books on feminist theology by many well-known authors. Ideal for classroom instruction, discussion groups, and personal study, this volume is an exceptional, user-friendly guide to contemporary feminist thought.
