Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellwood City, located near the confluence of the Beaver River and Connoquenessing Creek in southern Lawrence County, western Pennsylvania, was founded by prominent industrialist Henry W. Hartman in 1889. Hartman purchased the land for the town, had a luxury hotel built, and arranged for an impressive number of industries to locate in the city. The city was named for his friend Isaac Ellwood, the inventor of the barbed wire fence. The seamless steel tube industry and the associated companies, later part of U.S. Steel Corporation, eventually became the most important industry in Ellwood City. Hartman was also responsible for the improvement of picturesque Rock Point Park, a well-known summer resort located across Connoquenessing Creek from Ellwood City. In 1905 Henry Hartman's Pennsylvania Company leased the park to the Rock Point Amusement Company, which installed pavilions, rides, ball fields, boat rentals, and other attractions. The improved park was heavily promoted by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which ran excursions to and from the park. After Ellwood City outlawed alcoholic beverages in 1911, park attendance declined and by the end of that year the park closed and many of the buildings were dismantled. A fire in 1915 destroyed the remaining structures. This book contains a compilation of new material or what has not been widely published or easily available elsewhere dating from about 1880 to the end of World War II pertaining to Ellwood City, Rock Point Park, and neighboring communities of Burnstown, Chewton, Ellport, Hazel Dell, Newport, Wampum, and Wurtemburg. Included are interesting newspaper reports, photographs, and as complete a presentation of picture postcards of the area as available to the author. The book is over 300 pages, and over 460 early real photo and printed postcard views are reproduced, many in color, along with a number of old maps of the area. Also included are photos of numerous historical items of interest from Ellwood City and Rock Point Park.

Download or read book Ellwood City written by Everett E. Bleakney (Jr.). This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellwood City was the concept of 19th-century entrepreneur Henry W. Hartman. In 1889, he formed the Pittsburgh Company to create a town south of the Connoquenessing Creek near the village of Hazel Dell. Local farm properties were purchased, and the town quickly began to take shape. Along with houses, the first major building was the Hotel Oliver. The Ellwood Short Line and later the Beaver and Ellwood Railroads were built to meet the demands of the growing steel industry. In 1891, the Ellwood Shafting and Tube Company was founded, producing the first seamless steel tubing and establishing Ellwood City as the "birthplace of the seamless tube industry." Mills, financial institutions, stores, schools, churches, civic organizations, and building trades thrived as construction in the new town grew.

Book Synopsis Lawrence County by : Anita DeVivo

Download or read book Lawrence County written by Anita DeVivo. This book was released on 2007-06-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawrence County was named for naval captain James Lawrence, who gave the famous command Dont give up the ship during the War of 1812. His command became a slogan for western Pennsylvanians in the early 1800s when what was to become Lawrence County was divided between Mercer County and Beaver County. In 1820, residents started to protest the inconvenience of conducting business in two jurisdictions and proposed a new county to unify the community. They did not give up the ship. Finally in 1849, Lawrence County was authorized. The new county was rich with rolling hills, rivers, forests, and fertile land. Limestone, iron ore, coal, and clay supported burgeoning industries. Lawrence County illustrates the effect of these industries on the area through more than 200 vintage postcards and photographs. Also illustrated are the Old Order Amish and places such as Possum Hollow, Breakneck Bridge, SNPJ, and Energy.
