Book excerpt: The authors of this contribution to the literature of resonance spectroscopy in paramagnetic systems are primarily concerned with the properties of the rare earth ions and, as such, the formal derivation of crystal field theory is set out in a manner which reflects this dominant interest. The ions of the 3d transition group are perhaps given too cursory a treatment in Chapter Two for those students of RF spectroscopy who have a somewhat less rare-earth oriented interest in the subject. Since the exam ples cited in the text do include some 3d transition ions, it is perhaps worthwhile in a preface of this sort to extend the broad theoretical concepts and group characteriza tion of Chapter Two to cover, in a somewhat more detailed manner, the derivation of the spin-Hamiltonian for this case. In Chapter Two, mention is made of the fact that for the 4f rare earth ions the spin orbit coupling energy is in general large compared to the crystal field influence of the surrounding ligand matrix. In such a case, the quantum number J is a good quantum number for the rare earth ion in question and the crystal field effects are taken into account within 1M, states. In this formulation, which is pursued in detail in this book, the effects of spin-orbit coupling have been taken care of at the very outset by the d~"ining of the 1M, states.

Book Synopsis Electron Spin Resonance by : Philip Henri Rieger

Download or read book Electron Spin Resonance written by Philip Henri Rieger. This book was released on 2007. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes in mathematical terms the extraction of useful information from ESR spectra as applied to paramagnetic organic, inorganic and organometalic molecules. It lays a firm groundwork for understanding more sophisticated experiments, which the availability of newer commercial instruments has made possible. It takes the reader step by step through obtaining and interpretating ESR spectra of paramagnetic molecules. The mathematical basis of each observed phenomena are detailed and examples given. In particular there is a detailed discussion of 2nd order pertubation theory treatment of the Spin Hamiltonian for non-coincident G and A axes.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Electron Spin Resonance by : Charles P. Jr. Poole

Download or read book Handbook of Electron Spin Resonance written by Charles P. Jr. Poole. This book was released on 1999-11-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first volume, Professors Poole and Farach provided one of the first definitive reference tools for this field. In this second volume, the authors present a comprehensive source for subfields of ESR not covered in the first volume, including: * Sensitivity * Field Swept versus Frequency Swept Spectra * Resonators * Line Shapes * Electron Spin Echo Envelope Modulation * Hamiltonian types and symmetries * ESR Imaging * High Magnetic Fields and High Frequencies. Written by recognized experts in the field, and intended for students and researchers, these handbooks bring together wide-ranging data from diverse disciplines within ESR, and then integrate it into a comprehesive and definitive resource. An invaluable reference for all those involved in ESR research.
