Book excerpt: A series of full-scale lateral loading tests for instrumented piles in cohesive and cohesionless soils were carried out at Oregon State University to assess the lateral response of piles in freefield and near slope conditions. Instrumentation data from the free-field piles and the piles installed at different distances from the slope crest were used extensively to monitor lateral pile response and to back-calculate p-y curves. For the cohesive soil tests, it was found that for small pile head displacements (less than 1.0 inch), the proximity of slope has insignificant effects on piles 2D or further from the slope crest where D is the pile diameter. For the piles on the slope crest, the effects of the soil slope should always be considered. The presence of the slope has insignificant effects for piles installed at distances of 8D or greater from the crest. For the cohesionless soil tests, the effects of slope on lateral pile capacity are insignificant at displacements of less than 2.0 inches for piles located 2D and further from the crest. For piles located at 4D or greater from the slope crest, the effects of slope on p-y curves are insignificant.

Book excerpt: Deep foundations, including driven piles, are used to support vertical loads of structures and applied lateral forces. Many pile supported structures, including bridges, are subjected to large lateral loads in the form of wind, wave, seismic, and traffic impact loads. In many practical situations, structures subjected to lateral loading are located near or in excavated and fill slopes or embankments. Full-scale research to examine the effects of soil slope on lateral pile capacity is limited. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects on lateral capacity of piles located in or near cohesionless soil slopes. A full-scale lateral load testing program was undertaken on pipe piles in a cohesionless soil at Oregon State University. Five piles were tested near a 2H:1V test slope and located between 0D to 8D behind the slope crest, where D is the pile diameter. Two vertical baseline piles and three battered piles were also tested in level ground conditions. The cohesionless backfill soil was a well-graded material with a fines content of less than 10% and a relative compaction of 95%, meeting the Caltrans specification for structural backfill. Data collected from the instrumented piles was used to back calculate p-y curves, load-displacement curves, reduction factors, and load resistance ratios for each pile. The effects of slope on lateral pile capacity are insignificant at displacements of less than 2.0 inches for piles located 2D and further from the crest. For pile located at 4D or greater from the slope crest, the effect of slope is insignificant on p-y curves. A simplified p-multiplier design procedure derived from back-calculated p-y curves is proposed to account for the effects of soil slope. Comparisons of the full-scale results were made using proposed recommendations from the available literature. Lateral resistance ratios obtained by computer, centrifuge, and small scale-models tend to be conservative and overestimate the effects of slope on lateral capacities. Standard cohesionless p-y curve methods slightly over predict the soil resistance at very low displacements but significantly under predict the ultimate soil resistance. Available reduction factors from the literature, or p-multipliers, are slightly conservative and compare well with the back-calculated p-y curves from this study.

Book excerpt: Pile supported bridges are typically constructed near or in a natural or man-made slope and are subjected to lateral loading. The current design method for laterally loaded piles involves the use of Winkler's spring concept with the standard nonlinear p-y curves. The available p-y curves were developed based on results of full-scale lateral loading tests for piles in level ground. Due to limited test results from full-scale lateral loading tests for piles installed near a slope, current practice has no specific procedures for the design of piles in such condition. This study is aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the effects of slope on lateral capacity of piles through experimental and analytical programs. A series of full-scale lateral loading tests on instrumented piles in cohesive soils were conducted at Oregon State University in 2009 to assess the behavior of laterally loaded piles in free-field and near slope conditions. Data from the tests was used to backcalculate p-y curves. It was found that for small soil displacements (i.e., less than 0.5 inch), the proximity of slope has small to insignificant effect on the lateral pile response. At larger soil displacements, the proximity of slope adversely affected the lateral capacity of the soil-pile system and consequently the p-y curves. Specifically with regard to Caltrans Bridge Design Specifications Article 4.5.6.5.1, for maximum allowable pile deflection of 1/4-inch under Service Limit State Load, the soil slope appears to have insignificant effects for piles installed at 2D or further from the slope crest, where D is the pile diameter. For piles installed on the slope crest (0D), the effects of slope are most pronounced and should be considered at all displacement levels. The effects of slope on the lateral capacity were insignificant for piles installed at distances of 8D or greater from the slope crest. Based on comparisons of the back-calculated p-y curves from these experiments, p-multipliers are proposed as a function of soil displacement to account for slope effects. Using the full-scale test results, the capability of available p-y curves to predict the lateral response of free-field piles was evaluated. It was found that standard p-y curves available in the literature for cohesive soils give reasonable predictions of the lateral pile response for free-field piles. Hyperbolic p-y criteria appear to be most suitable to describe the back-calculated baseline p-y curves from this study. In addition, the capability of existing p-y recommendation for piles on a slope crest was evaluated; design guidelines based on the findings from this study is presented. Finally, the finite element program Plaxis 3D was used to simulate the lateral loading tests. The procedure was validated by comparing the computed results with the full-scale test results.

Book excerpt: This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.
