Book excerpt: The proposed international student orientation for new Education Abroad Program (EAP) Reciprocity students enrolling at the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley) as part of a one or two semester exchange is an innovative design that aims to provide students with the most pertinent resources available to them in order to ease their transition into the culture of the United States (U.S.). The orientation will be hosted by the Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) office which serves more than 5,000 international students and scholars at UC Berkeley annually. The proposed design introduces a new program model that emerged out of a comprehensive review of current issues, trends and studies in the field of international student advising. The core of the orientation program focuses on three major points: 1.) Introducing students to the U.S. higher education system, 2.) Addressing language differences, 3.) Cross-cultural adjustment issues. Using these three points as the basis of the orientation sessions, ten days of planned activities and events have been designed. The orientation program utilizes a variety of teaching methods integrating faculty, UC Berkeley staff and current students through interactive sessions, informal discussions, workshops and planned social activities. The design strives to meet the needs of students and at the same time implement SISS0́9s strategic vision to forge a positive identity that works collaboratively and proactively with other units within the UC Berkeley community.

Book Synopsis Study Abroad by : Jerry S. Carlson

Download or read book Study Abroad written by Jerry S. Carlson. This book was released on 1990-08-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is assumed that American undergraduates who study abroad derive unique benefits from the experience, until now its actual impact has not been assessed. This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. This analysis will be relevant for educational decision-makers, funding organizations, government, and the research community.

Book excerpt: The new edition of this popular textbook, once again, provides an indispensable guide for the next generation of mineralogists. Designed for use on one- or two-semester courses, this second edition has been thoughtfully reorganised, making it more accessible to students, whilst still being suitable for an advanced mineralogy course. Additions include expanded introductions to many chapters, a new introductory chapter on crystal chemistry, revised figures, and an extended plates section containing beautiful colour photographs. Text boxes include historical background and case studies to engage students, and end-of-chapter questions help them reinforce concepts. With new online resources to support learning and teaching, including laboratory exercises, PowerPoint slides, useful web links and mineral identification tables, this is a sound investment for students in the fields of geology, materials science and environmental science, and a valuable reference for researchers, collectors and anyone interested in minerals.
