Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Conflicts between developed and developing countries over global environmental problems, and the fact that the co-operation required to solve environmental collective action problems is typically elusive in the world of international relations, suggests a research agenda regarding how one might hop to bring about co-operation in an inherently non-co-operative international setting. In particular, what can economic theory tell us about the design of international environmental agreements (IEAs) that will protect the world's fragile environmental resources? This book collects work on IEAs which demonstrates the value of rigorous microeconomic and econometric modelling in comprehending the many and varied facets of the design and implementation in IEAs.

Book Synopsis How Regime Theory and the Economic Theory of International Environmental Cooperation Can Learn from Each Other by : Eric Neumayer

Download or read book How Regime Theory and the Economic Theory of International Environmental Cooperation Can Learn from Each Other written by Eric Neumayer. This book was released on 2010. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic theorists of international environmental cooperation and regime theorists who focus on the environment ask the same two basic research questions: why does international environmental cooperation emerge in some cases, but not in others, and why is cooperation 'wide' and 'deep' in some cases, but not in others? Unfortunately, the two schools of thought do not collaborate much in their respective attempts to answer these and related questions. Instead, mutual neglect is the general rule. This paper tries to show how regime theory can learn from the findings of the economic theory of international environmental cooperation and vice versa and how both can fruitfully learn from each other. An exploitation of mutual learning opportunities is likely to lead to a more comprehensive understanding of international environmental cooperation and can ultimately result in better informed policy advice.

Download or read book Game Theory and International Environmental Cooperation written by . This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key environmental issues, such as biodiversity and climate change, have in recent years become more pressing than ever. Where the critical papers in the early 1990s explained the difficulties of cooperation in tackling transboundary environmental problems, later works have analyzed the various alternatives, and increased our understanding of various institutional designs and negotiation protocols' impact on the success of cooperation. This Research Review identifies the most important articles on the game theoretic analysis of international environmental cooperation to both confront the cooperative and non-cooperative approaches to this, and demonstrate the diversity of methods used to analyze international environmental agreements
