Book Synopsis East Asia and Pacific Update, April 2009 by : Weltbank

Book excerpt: Developing East Asia is battling the forces of global recession. The impact of the crisis in the advanced countries was transmitted to the economies of the region with unusual speed. In the region, the initial global financial turbulence was marked by sudden reversals of capital flows in the middle-income economies, rapidly declining equity market prices, a sharp increase in the price of external private capital, a shortage of dollar liquidity, and in some cases, a depreciating currency. Now with aggregate global demand falling precipitously, region-wide declines in exports and industrial production are triggering widespread factory closures, rising unemployment, and lower real wages, with disproportionate effects on the poor and near-poor. Authorities in many countries are implementing social programs and cash transfers to assist those most in need. Where possible, policymakers have responded quickly with expansionary monetary and fiscal policies, including fiscal stimulus packages, although in most cases these measures will only mitigate, not overcome, the contraction forces operating on their economies.

Book excerpt: The 'East Asia and Pacific Update' is the World Bank s comprehensive semiannual review of developing economies in the region. This November 2009 issue discusses East Asia's role as the driving force behind the global economic rebound. The region s economy has rebounded from the financial crisis and global recesesion that began in late 2008, but has it reached recovery stage? Why has the East Asia and Pacific region fared better than other developing regions? Can the region continue to grow as fast as it did before the crisis if demand from the developed world remains weak? Take China out of the equation and how is the rest of the region really doing? These are some of the questions addressed in this report. Presenting unique perspectives along with the latest data on the region, the East Asia Update is a valued resource for policymakers, researchers, businesspersons, students, and anyone else with a serious interest in this dynamic region.

Book Synopsis Asia-Pacific Security Dynamics in the Obama Era by : S. Mahmud Ali

Download or read book Asia-Pacific Security Dynamics in the Obama Era written by S. Mahmud Ali. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the critical changes to the Asia-Pacific security architecture emerging in the context of shifts in the global order as the Obama Administrationâe(tm)s major strategic innovation and likely legacy unfold. The author reviews the state of the international security system during the Obama presidency, recording the Administrationâe(tm)s Asia-Pacific inheritance, and tracing its efforts to chart a collaborative course aimed at retaining US primacy amidst strategic turbulence. While security discourses are coloured by relative US âe~declineâe(tm) and Chinaâe(tm)s âe~rise,âe(tm) the book points out the competitive-cooperative complexity of interactions, with symbiotic economic ties moderating rivalry. Focusing on the military-security cutting edge of Sino-US dynamics, the narrative outlines the dangers posed by extreme nationalist dialectics in an interdependent milieu. It examines the policies of Japan, Australia, India and Russia towards the evolving Sino-US diarchy, while recording Washingtonâe(tm)s and Beijingâe(tm)s contrasting approaches to these allies and possible adversaries. The book concludes with observations on the loss of definition and clarity as the system evolves with multiple actors bidding for influence, and the need for statesmanship as the systemic fulcrum moves from the Atlantic to the Pacific. ãee This book will be of interest to students and scholars of International Politics, Asian Politics, American Politics, International Security and International Relations.
