Book excerpt: This paper analyzes a dynamic general equilibrium model featuring input-output linkages, imperfect competition, and external economies of scale with firm entry and exit. We analytically show the interaction between input-output linkages and firm entry and exit augments the amplification of productivity shocks through the elastic labor supply channel additionally. A basic calibration of the dynamic model with cap- ital accumulation shows that output is 30% more volatile in the dynamic production network with cascading failures than without cascading failures.

Book Synopsis Networks of Interacting Machines by : Dieter Armbruster

Download or read book Networks of Interacting Machines written by Dieter Armbruster. This book was released on 2005. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review volume is devoted to a discussion of analogies and differences of complex production systems ? natural, as in biological cells, or man-made, as in economic systems or industrial production. Taking this unified look at production is based on two observations: Cells and many biological networks are complex production units that have evolved to solve production problems in a reliable and optimal way in a highly stochastic environment. On the other hand, industrial production is becoming increasingly complex and often hard to predict. As a result, modeling and control of such production networks involve many different spatial and temporal scales and decision policies for many different structures. The common themes of industrial and biological production include evolution and optimization, synchronization and self-organization, robust operation despite high stochasticity, and hierarchical dynamics. The mathematical techniques used come from dynamical systems theory, transport equations, control theory, pattern formation, graph theory, discrete event simulations, stochastic processes, and others. The application areas range from semiconductor production to supply chains, protein networks, slime molds, social networks, and whole economies.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Lines of Collaboration by : Hao Zhong

Download or read book Dynamic Lines of Collaboration written by Hao Zhong. This book was released on 2019-12-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the systematic modeling of complex situations characterized by escalating disruptions, and on cycles of dynamic collaboration for the best handling of disruptions. What can we do about disruptive events and their cascading effects? Thanks to the evolution of intelligent technologies for interaction, communication, sharing, and collaboration, cyberspace is a rapidly expanding world. Our systems of machines, software services, and human organizations have become increasingly interdependent, in other words – networked. As a result, disruptions that initially affect only a small part of any network tend to escalate. At the same time, cyber solutions can support first responders and emergency handlers, enhancing their responsiveness and ability to collaborate with one another in controlling disruptions and preventing their escalation. In this book, we are chiefly interested in how effectively these collaborations can be supported and how we can further optimize such support. Solution guidelines for optimizing collaborations are illustrated with examples in various application domains: agricultural robotics, civil cyber-physical infrastructure, visual analytics, manufacturing automation, and supply chains. Open-source simulation tools are also provided to supplement the main content.
