Book excerpt: The first part of this thesis proposes a control-oriented vortex-coupled nonlinear retarded state space representation of free-to-roll motion of a delta wing. Linear, nonlinear and neural network based parameter identification methods have been used to approximate the rolling moment coefficient. Various experimental results validate the proposed model. In the second part, fast vortex-coupled delta wing roll dynamics with state delay in is controlled using a robust adaptive output feedback control law. The controller has been tested against modelling uncertainties in rolling moment coefficient. The controller is shown to render the delta wing vortex-coupled roll dynamics globally practically stable. Heuristic design process and parameter selection methods have been proposed for easier implementation of this control algorithm. The results of the numerical simulation demonstrate the applicability of this controller for different initial conditions. The third part proposes a combinatory control strategy combined of a modified state feedback stabilizing controller, as the internal loop, and a robust adaptive sliding tracking controller. The robust adaptive tracking controller utilizes a special gaussian radial basis function network for online estimation of unknown nonlinearity. To show the capability of the proposed combinatory control structure, it has been implemented to the delta wing dynamics to follow a complex reference trajectory. Implementing the proposed combined control structure enhanced the tracking performance in comparison to the controller without internal loop. Adding two more control inputs enhanced the tracking controller performance. The Heuristic design process and parameter selection methods have been proposed for easier implementation of tracking control and combined control structure.

Book Synopsis Reactive Flow Control of Delta Wing Vortex by : Yong Liu

Download or read book Reactive Flow Control of Delta Wing Vortex written by Yong Liu. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the reactive flow control of delta wing leading edge vortices using along-core pulse width modulation (PWM) flow injection is presented. Leading edge vortices on the upper surface of a delta wing can augment lift. Manipulating breakdown points of leading edge vortices can effectively change the delta wing's lift and drag and generate attitude control torque. In this paper, a dynamic model of active flow control of vortex break down points is identified from wind tunnel data using a model scheduling method. Based on the identified model, a closed-loop active flow controller is developed. Simulation and real-time wind tunnel test show that the closed-loop controller can effectively manipulate the upper surface pressure of the delta wing, which indicates the closed-loop controller can effectively control vortex breakdown points.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the work related to tasks #1, 2, 3 and 5 for the project entitled "Synthesis and Implementation of Single- and Multi-vehicle Systems Guidance Based on Nonlinear Control and Optimization Techniques". In this report the radial basis function (RBF) neural network control approach for active flow control extended to handle unmodelled dynamics and multiple equilibrial in hybrid (switching) system framework. Hybrid RBF adaptive controller applied to delta wing vortex-coupled-led roll dynamics using hysteresis switching logic. The combinatory control method also applied to the delta wing dynamics coupled with the SMA micro actuator dynamics which has been obtained form identification process in DRDC. In this report also the linear parameter-varying sliding mode control (LPVSMC) approach which has been developed for linear parameter-varying time-delayed systems (LPVTDS) has been applied to delta wing model coupled with SMA dynamics. This approach combines sliding mode control (SMC), linear parameter-varying (LPV) control theory, and time delay stability analysis to solve a LPVTDS control problem. It is anticipated that this method will lead to significant improvement over existing SMC approaches in aerospace applications with parameter variations and coupled with new SMA actuating devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forebody Vortex Control (FVC) is an emerging technology that has received widespread and concentrated attention by many researchers for application on fighter aircraft to enhance aerodynamic controllability at high angles of attack. This research explores potential application of FVC to a NASP-type configuration. The configuration investigated is characterized by a slender, circular cross-section forebody and a 78 deg swept delta wing. A man-in-the-loop, six-degress-of-freedom, high-fidelity simulation was developed that demonstrates the implementation and advantages of pneumatic forebody vortex control. Static wind tunnel tests were used as the basis for the aerodynamic characteristics modeled in the simulation. Dynamic free-to-roll wind tunnel tests were analyzed and the wing rock motion investigated. A non-linear model of the dynamic effects of the bare airframe and the forebody vortex control system were developed that closely represented the observed behavior. Multiple state-of-the-art digital flight control systems were developed that included different utilizations of pneumatic vortex control. These were evaluated through manned simulation. Design parameters for a pneumatic forebody vortex control system were based on data collected regarding the use of blowing and the mass flow required during realistic flight maneuvers.
