Book Synopsis How Women Navigate Safety in the Dominican Bateyes by : Mary Margaret Tull

Download or read book How Women Navigate Safety in the Dominican Bateyes written by Mary Margaret Tull. This book was released on 2019. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has demonstrated that individuals of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic are at high risk of violence and experience multiple levels of structural oppression. However, less research exists specifically for women of Haitian descent, who are at unique risk of violence due to the complex political history between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as structural and gendered violence. I use frameworks of socio-ecological systems, intersectionality, structured violence, and gendered violence to consider how women of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic construct safety and prioritize different needs for their survival. I used thematic analysis to analyze life history interviews of women who had married at least once and who endorsed experiencing violence in their lives. Analysis demonstrated that women navigate a variety of informal supports primarily with other women to address different needs, including material, emotional, and interpersonal issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Violence against women has presented a challenge for those tasked with addressing crime and victimization. It is a complex phenomenon that exists between the private and public spheres of society affecting nearly all aspects of a victim’s life, as well as those close to them. The Dominican Republic began to address domestic and gender violence in the past few decades, and victim services have emerged in efforts to assist Dominican women and girls escaping abuse. This study reviews the existing literature regarding violence against women and girls, and service provision in global, regional, and national contexts, and analyzes qualitative data regarding victim service provision in the Dominican Republic. This study aims to contribute to the extant body of research regarding victim service provision in the Dominican Republic by evaluating existing services and barriers to these services at the systemic, institutional, and cultural or individual levels. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with service providers from the public and private sectors from 3 geographical regions across the country regarding legislation and policies that address violence against women and girls, law enforcement, and victim service provision. The interviews describe a wide range of victim services, relevant legislation, barriers to access services, and service provision. Overall, respondents acknowledged legislation and policies that have helped combat violence against women and girls and established services for victims and discussed barriers to service provision and perceived barriers for victims to access services. The limitations, implications, and recommendations for future research and policy are discussed to guide future research.

Book Synopsis A Beast in the Silence by : Yvonne Francisco

Download or read book A Beast in the Silence written by Yvonne Francisco. This book was released on 2020-04-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Beast In Silence By: Yvonne Francisco In these short stories, the author conveys the feelings and anguish of women living under the yoke of domineering and abusive men, or, as she calls them, ‘men-beasts’, a new sub-species, which, in her own words, emerged as a hybrid between humans and some kind of wild animal. Through her tales, the author vividly shows that no specific social class or educational levels can prevent women from being caught up in the so-called cycle of violence, as reflected by increasingly shocking statistics worldwide, with so many women experiencing violence at the hands of their current and former partners or husbands on a daily basis. Readers will also be able to discover the particular characteristics that define this ‘man-beast’ or abuser. In a break from literary convention, the author does not name any of her characters, using just personal pronouns like ‘he’ or ‘she’ to help readers to identify with them. If they too are experiencing identical or similar situations, some readers might come to realize that what is going on in their own lives is not normal but part of that same vicious cycle of domestic violence.

Book excerpt: Harmonizing Latina Visions and Voices: Cultural Explorations ofEntornos discursively challenges the erasures, stigma, and silences imposed on women by functioning as a harmonizing choir, a collection of voices to testify on mujerismo, its vision, and its promise for (our) future. This collection puts “on the record” a pathway toward liberation that pushes back against white supremacist projects unleashed by academia, our families, official narratives of the State, and immigration. This book does not seek to equate the experiences of all Latinas or envision a one-size-fits-all response. We harmonize these diverse voices, understanding that these stories, poems, and essays are invoking different spaces, times, and experiences. We offer them as an intergenerational, intellectual, and spiritual dialogue. As a practice, this work centers and contextualizes how women’s resistance is articulated and expressed. The stories reflected in the chapters that follow are often matricentric, transnational, and queer. Some recurring themes center on the policing, policies, and legislations that govern Latina’s bodies and the entornos (social/environmental worlds) in which they move, are detained, or embodied.
