Download or read book DJ Culture in the Mix written by Bernardo Attias. This book was released on 2013-10-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DJ stands at a juncture of technology, performance and culture in the increasingly uncertain climate of the popular music industry, functioning both as pioneer of musical taste and gatekeeper of the music industry. Together with promoters, producers, video jockeys (VJs) and other professionals in dance music scenes, DJs have pushed forward music techniques and technological developments in last few decades, from mashups and remixes to digital systems for emulating vinyl performance modes. This book is the outcome of international collaboration among academics in the study of electronic dance music. Mixing established and upcoming researchers from the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Australia and Brazil, the collection offers critical insights into DJ activities in a range of global dance music contexts. In particular, chapters address digitization and performativity, as well as issues surrounding the gender dynamics and political economies of DJ cultures and practices.

Book Synopsis DJ culture by : Ulf Poschardt

Download or read book DJ culture written by Ulf Poschardt. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Girl Culture [2 volumes] by : Claudia Mitchell

Download or read book Girl Culture [2 volumes] written by Claudia Mitchell. This book was released on 2007-12-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before has so much popular culture been produced about what it means to be a girl in today's society. From the first appearance of Nancy Drew in 1930, to Seventeen magazine in 1944 to the emergence of Bratz dolls in 2001, girl culture has been increasingly linked to popular culture and an escalating of commodities directed towards girls of all ages. Editors Claudia A. Mitchell and Jacqueline Reid-Walsh investigate the increasingly complex relationships, struggles, obsessions, and idols of American tween and teen girls who are growing up faster today than ever before. From pre-school to high school and beyond, Girl Culture tackles numerous hot-button issues, including the recent barrage of advertising geared toward very young girls emphasizing sexuality and extreme thinness. Nothing is off-limits: body image, peer pressure, cliques, gangs, and plastic surgery are among the over 250 in-depth entries highlighted. Comprehensive in its coverage of the twenty and twenty-first century trendsetters, fashion, literature, film, in-group rituals and hot-button issues that shape—and are shaped by—girl culture, this two-volume resource offers a wealth of information to help students, educators, and interested readers better understand the ongoing interplay between girls and mainstream culture.

Book Synopsis Groove Music by : Mark Katz

Download or read book Groove Music written by Mark Katz. This book was released on 2012-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's all about the scratch in Groove Music, award-winning music historian Mark Katz's groundbreaking book about the figure that defined hip-hop: the DJ.Today hip-hop is a global phenomenon, and the sight and sound of DJs mixing and scratching is familiar in every corner of the world. But hip-hop was born in the streets of New York in the 1970s when a handful of teenagers started experimenting with spinning vinyl records on turntables in new ways. Although rapping has become the face of hip-hop, for nearly 40 years the DJ has proven the backbone of the culture. In Groove Music, Katz (an amateur DJ himself) delves into the fascinating world of the DJ, tracing the art of the turntable from its humble beginnings in the Bronx in the 1970s to its meteoric rise to global phenomenon today. Based on extensive interviews with practicing DJs, historical research, and his own personal experience, Katz presents a history of hip-hop from the point of view of the people who invented the genre. Here, DJs step up to discuss a wide range of topics, including the transformation of the turntable from a playback device to an instrument in its own right, the highly charged competitive DJ battles, the game-changing introduction of digital technology, and the complex politics of race and gender in the DJ scene.Exhaustively researched and written with all the verve and energy of hip-hop itself, Groove Music will delight experienced and aspiring DJs, hip-hop fans, and all students or scholars of popular music and culture.

Book Synopsis DJ Culture and Music Journalism by : Barbara Wimmer

Download or read book DJ Culture and Music Journalism written by Barbara Wimmer. This book was released on 2008. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject Communications - Journalism, Journalism Professions, grade: very good, University of Vienna, course: Journalism, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: My presentation deals with the term and the existence of a "DJ Culture" as a worldwide phenomenon. DJ Culture does not only exist at one place in the whole world - it is a cultural movement which can be mostly be found in urban and suburban surroundings in the so-called "western-orientated" world. If somebody is interested in this cultural development, he or she can spot it in the United States as well as in Europe. Apart from introducing this phenomenon to you, my task is also to present the existence of DJ magazines and general music magazines located in Austria, Germany and Great Britain. Because of the wide range of musical styles, I reduced my reflection to hip hop & breakbeat culture including the new phenomenon drum'n'bass. For those of you who have not heard the word DJ yet - it is an abbreviation of the word "disk jokey" and formerly was defined as somebody who presents discs.
