Book excerpt: Diffraction radiation is that electromagnetic energy which is caused by a relativistic charged particle passing through an aperture in an opaque material. Ter-Mikaelian solved for the diffraction radiation from a point charge. This paper discusses the phenomena resulting from finite, relativistic charge bunches. Using the Huygens Fresnel principle, diffraction patterns from spherical and cylindrical charge distributions are found and plotted. For charge bunch sizes less than the radiation wavelength, the results are almost identical to those for point charges. The radiation pattern is composed of two regions. The transition region is characterized by a strong peak at theta = 1/gamma, the Lorentz factor. The diffraction region consists of a series of peaks and nulls in field strength typical of the standard plane wave diffraction pattern. (Theses).

Book Synopsis Diffraction Radiation from Relativistic Particles by : Alexander Potylitsyn

Download or read book Diffraction Radiation from Relativistic Particles written by Alexander Potylitsyn. This book was released on 2010-10-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with diffraction radiation, which implies the boundary problems of electromagnetic radiation theory. Diffraction radiation is generated when a charged particle moves near a target edge at a distance ( – Lorentz factor, – wave length). Diffraction radiation of non-relativistic particles is widely used to design intense emitters in the cm wavelength range. Diffraction radiation from relativistic charged particles is important for noninvasive beam diagnostics and design of free electron lasers based on Smith-Purcell radiation which is diffraction radiation from periodic structures. Different analytical models of diffraction radiation and results of recent experimental studies are presented in this book. The book may also serve as guide to classical electrodynamics applications in beam physics and electrodynamics. It can be of great use for young researchers to develop skills and for experienced scientists to obtain new results.

Book Synopsis Diffraction Transition Radiation from Periodic Electron Bunches by : Young Moon Lee

Download or read book Diffraction Transition Radiation from Periodic Electron Bunches written by Young Moon Lee. This book was released on 1987. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the first lobe of diffraction transition radiation from a hole in a thin aluminum foil for electron-beam energies of 32.9 MeV and 63.3 MeV has been made. The effect of the hole size was investigated using radii of 3 cm, 5 cm, and 7 cm. Although the measured peak angle and intensity are not well matched to the theoretical values, these experiments attempt to isolate the diffraction transition radiation from Cerenkov radiation and transition radiation. The normalization of the detected signal to the beam current was tried for compensation of the beam fluctuation. Conclusive results have not yet been obtained, but this investigation provides directions for future experiments. Keywords: Diffraction transition radiation; Transition radiation; Cerenkov radiation; Normalization.
