Book Synopsis Developing Cross-Cultural Measurement by : Thanh V. Tran

Download or read book Developing Cross-Cultural Measurement written by Thanh V. Tran. This book was released on 2009-03-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social workers engage in cross-cultural research in order to understand how diverse populations cope with life situations, to identify risk and protective factors across cultures, and to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and programs on the well-being of individuals from different cultures. In order to do so, it is necessary to begin with meaningful, appropriate, and practical research instruments, yet such instruments are not always readily available, or they may be misleading or biased. In this clearly written pocket guide, social work researchers will find a concise, easy-to-follow explanation of how to develop and assess cross-cultural measures that sidestep such complications and provide reliable, valid data. Using a step-by-step approach, expert cross-cultural researcher Thanh V. Tran carefully explores the issues and methodology in cross-cultural measurement development in social work research and evaluation. The book draws on existing cross-cultural research in social sciences and related areas to illustrate how to formulate research questions, select observable statistics, understand cross-cultural translation, evaluate and implement measurement equivalence, and discern quality within practices of measurement development. Tran also discusses how to use statistics software programs such as SPSS to generate data for LISREL analyses, providing enough detail to help readers grasp the programs' applications in this area but not so much as to overwhelm. This concise text offers a wealth of knowledge about using and interpreting the use of culturally relevant research instruments. Doctoral students and social researchers in the field seeking guidance in selecting and adapting such instruments in their studies, or developing and assessing their own, will find it a terrific source of essential information for their work. Download or read book Encyclopedia of Quality of Life and Well-Being Research written by Alex C. Michalos. This book was released on 2014-02-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide a comprehensive reference work on scientific and other scholarly research on the quality of life, including health-related quality of life research or also called patient-reported outcomes research. Since the 1960s two overlapping but fairly distinct research communities and traditions have developed concerning ideas about the quality of life, individually and collectively, one with a fairly narrow focus on health-related issues and one with a quite broad focus. In many ways, the central issues of these fields have roots extending to the observations and speculations of ancient philosophers, creating a continuous exploration by diverse explorers in diverse historic and cultural circumstances over several centuries of the qualities of human existence. What we have not had so far is a single, multidimensional reference work connecting the most salient and important contributions to the relevant fields. Entries are organized alphabetically and cover basic concepts, relatively well established facts, lawlike and causal relations, theories, methods, standardized tests, biographic entries on significant figures, organizational profiles, indicators and indexes of qualities of individuals and of communities of diverse sizes, including rural areas, towns, cities, counties, provinces, states, regions, countries and groups of countries.

Book Synopsis Identification of Measures Related to Cross-Cultural Competence by :

Download or read book Identification of Measures Related to Cross-Cultural Competence written by . This book was released on 2008. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This task, the first of five tasks in a project to support Cultural Readiness for the Department of Defense, represents the first step in the development of a "paper and pencil" questionnaire measure of cultural competency. The purpose of this task was to identify measures that are reliable and valid for the measurement of cultural competency. Thus, our approach was to identify existing measures in published peer-reviewed literature to understand the available instruments, the dimensions and constructs they measure, the purposes and previous uses of these metrics, and their reported psychometric properties. This document provides an overview of the project as a context for this task, provides the findings of this task, and discusses the next steps in the project. This initial project supports the assessment of capabilities and requirements leading to the development of a common framework so as to "set the stage" for input to policy, as well as for research and training efforts by the emerging Department of Defense Cultural Center of Excellence. Thus, the overall purpose of this project is to develop a framework of cultural competence and its related measures. The project includes five tasks: (1) Identify Measures Related to Culture, (2) Establish Key Operational Definitions, (3) Review of the Literature, (4) Collection of Baseline Measures, and (5) Preliminary Report of Results. Identification of existing measures is the first step in the development of a measurement tool and in the development of a framework that includes and links the constructs that are part of cultural competency. To clarify how this first step supports the development of a measurement tool and how we conceive of this task in the context of the overall project, we briefly review the process for metric development in the next section.
