Book Synopsis Dark Humor by : Oliver Gaspirtz

Download or read book Dark Humor written by Oliver Gaspirtz. This book was released on 2020-04-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history’s darkest times, people have exhibited a particular type of humor: dark humor, also known as black humor, black comedy, dark comedy, or gallows humor. That’s my favorite kind. I like absurd, random stuff. But with a dark twist. Black humor makes fun of the things that terrify us. It’s a coping mechanism. Some people think death is taboo as a topic for jokes. But every stand up comic and every cartoonist knows that taboo jokes get the biggest laughs, the guilty laughs, and the biggest dopamine release. Humor is not supposed to be polite. It’s supposed to mock bad things. Here’s a little selection of some of my favorite cartoons, about life’s painful little absurdities that make me laugh. “I laugh because I must not cry, that is all, that is all.” -Abraham Lincoln "If you're a fan of Gary Larson's The Far Side, you'll love Gaspirtz's Dark Humor." -Not Abraham Lincoln

Book Synopsis DARK KNIGHTS, The Dark Humor of Police Officers by : Robert L. Bryan

Download or read book DARK KNIGHTS, The Dark Humor of Police Officers written by Robert L. Bryan. This book was released on 2023-08-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The police are seen as many things to many people; protectors, law enforcers, upstanding citizens, but rarely, if ever, are they seen as funny. However, when one stops to think about it for a second, it becomes clear that police officers must come across some of the craziest, most eccentric, and most unexpected aspects of everyday society as a fundamental part of their job. If only a police officer with a sense of humor decided to write some of their best stories down...? That's exactly what Robert L. Bryan does best. As a former NYC cop, Bryan's been in the thick of it for most of his career, treading the thin blue line between civility and chaos. Along the way, he's come across some seriously bizarre characters, and some even more bizarre situations. Sometimes, a man has just got to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, and with his talent for turning a phrase and spinning a good yarn, Dark Knights 3: The Dark Humor of Police Officers spins plenty of hilarious shaggy dog stories which range from the horrifyingly funny to the downright weird. ? Dark Knights 3: The Dark Humor of Police Officers manages to not just be a fantastic piece of light entertainment for those curious about the laughs within the force, it also offers a truly fascinating insight into some of the more unexpected aspects of the job. What happens when inexperienced police officers are put in front of a riot, and are told to act as if they were seasoned professionals? Where do most police officers' breaking points lie? Do male and female police officers react differently to different situations... and what happens if and when they do? This darkly funny and somewhat twisted collection of tales and memories will not only make you laugh, it will also get you thinking about the role the police have in society today, and where the force needs reform, reevaluation, and outright applause.

Book Synopsis Dark Humour and Social Satire in the Modern British Novel by : L. Colletta

Download or read book Dark Humour and Social Satire in the Modern British Novel written by L. Colletta. This book was released on 2003-09-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colletta uses psychoanalytic theories of joke-work and gallows humour to argue that dark humour is an important, defining characteristic of Modernism. She brings together the usual suspects alongside more often overlooked writers from the period, and asks probing questions about the relationship between a dark humour that 'revels in the non-rational, the unstable, and the fragmented, and resists easy definition and political usefulness' and the historical and social circumstances of the period. Colletta makes a compelling argument that probing deeply into the nature of humour or satire that define these 'social comedies' brings to light a more complex, and more accurate, understanding of the social changes and historical circumstances that define the modern era.
