Book Synopsis Dairy Farming in the 21st Century by : Bruce A. Scholten

Book excerpt: How do we achieve food security for a global population now over 7 billion people and trending towards 10 billion by 2050? This study of the global dairy industry examines how to balance our needs with those of animals and the environment. It scrutinises ruminant bovines' worrying exhaling of methane, a greenhouse gas which, fortunately, evidence shows can be reduced by adding seaweed to cattle feed. Are the multi-thousand-cow mega-dairies of the USA appropriate models for Africa and Asia's high-growth dairy regions, where so many women are smallholders? Is it ethical to keep cows in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), eating unnatural high-energy/low fibre diets when they prefer grazing pasture? Other issues include hormones for oestrus stimulation, and GMOs for milk yield, stressing cows' immune systems and drastically shortening longevity. This book offers multifaceted discussion of the central and ancillary issues relevant to dairying, and consumption of plant- and laboratory-based foods in the 21st century. No book to date offers such a comprehensive overview, linking ethics, environment, health and policy-making with in-depth coverage of the major dairy farming regions of the world.

Book excerpt: "How do we achieve food security for a global population now in excess of 7 billion people and trending towards 10 billion by 2050? As our eco-footprint increases it is difficult to balance our needs with those of animals and the environment. This study of the global dairy industry provides a telling story of the issues involved. Are the multi-thousand mega-dairies of the USA, which are increasingly evident elsewhere, more climate friendly than traditional farms? Is it ethical to keep cows confined in this way - which involves the use of confined animal feeding operation (CAFOs), high stocking density, unnatural high-energy/low fibre diets of totally mixed rations (TMR), hormones for estrus stimulation, GMO hormone for milk yield, leading to stress, depleted immune systems and drastically shortened lives of the cows. What are the implications for rural communities? Bruce Scholten's book will offer an in-depth and detailed discussion of the central and ancillary issues relevant to dairy farming and consumption in the 21st century, presenting the arguments of all sides involved. No book to date offers such a comprehensive overview, linking ethics, environment, health and policy-making with in-depth coverage of the major dairy farming regions of the world."--

Book Synopsis The English Dairy Farmer by : G. E. Fussell

Download or read book The English Dairy Farmer written by G. E. Fussell. This book was released on 2019-12-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966, this work by G. E. Fussell is a thorough examination of the role played by the English dairy farmer over the past four hundred years. Beginning his study with the cow he gives an account of the improved breeding and feeding methods that make today's cow a totally different beast to that of the Tudor farmer. A chapter is devoted to the cultivation of fodder crops and another to the comfort of the cow for, as the author states, pleasant conditions are an important factor in encouraging its productivity. The dairy industry, no less than any other in the nineteenth century, was the scene of numerous devices and inventions designed to improve milking methods. This, together with the development of the sale of milk in a liquid form, is discussed in later chapters. The practical difficulties of transporting milk had until about 1850 caused the major part of the milk produced to be turned into butter and cheese and the varying products of differing regions are fully described. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, however, the number of dairies prepared to retail milk grew in number to accommodate an ever increasing rate of milk consumption. Numerous farming textbooks published during the period and contemporary descriptions of the farming scene form the background for this scholarly appraisal. No other book has treated the English dairy farmer in such detail and, in drawing upon such a wealth of illustrative material to support his conclusions, G. E. Fussell has produced a work which will be valued by all agricultural historians.
