Download or read book A Systems Approach to Analyzing Cyber-Physical Threats in the Smart Grid written by . This book was released on 2016. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a systems analysis approach to characterizing the risk of a Smart Grid to a load-drop attack. A characterization of the risk is necessary for the design of detection and remediation strategies to address the consequences of such attacks. Using concepts from systems health management and system engineering, this work (a) first identifies metrics that can be used to generate constraints for security features, and (b) lays out an end-to-end integrated methodology using separate network and power simulations to assess system risk. We demonstrate our approach by performing a systems-style analysis of a load-drop attack implemented over the AMI subsystem and targeted at destabilizing the underlying power grid.

Book Synopsis Smart Grids as Cyber Physical Systems, 2 Volume Set by : O. V. Gnana Swathika

Download or read book Smart Grids as Cyber Physical Systems, 2 Volume Set written by O. V. Gnana Swathika. This book was released on 2024-05-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart Grids as Cyber Physical Systems, a new two-volume set from Wiley-Scrivener, provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental security of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, offering clarity on specific operating and security issues that may arise that deteriorate the overall operation and efficiency of smart grid systems. It also provides techniques to monitor and protect systems, as well as aids for designing a threat-free system. This title discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) may be extensively deployed in the prediction of energy generation, electric grid-related line loss prediction, load forecasting, and for predicting equipment failure prevention. It also discusses power generation systems, building service systems, and explores advances in machine learning, artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, and hybrid mechanisms. Additionally, we will explore research contribution of experts in CPS infrastructure systems, incorporating sustainability by embedding computing and communication in day-to-day smart grid applications. This book will be of immense use to practitioners in industries focusing on adaptive configuration and optimization in smart grid systems. Through case studies, it offers a rigorous introduction to the theoretical foundations, techniques, and practical solutions CPS offers. Building CPS with effective communication, control, intelligence, and security is discussed from societal and research perspectives and a forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and achieve progress in CPS is provided by highlighting applications, advances, and research challenges. This book offers a comprehensive look at ICS cyber threats, attacks, metrics, risk, situational awareness, intrusion detection, and security testing, providing a valuable reference set for current system owners who wish to configure and operate their ICSs securely.

Download or read book Smart Grid Control written by Jakob Stoustrup. This book was released on 2018-09-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the role of systems and control. Focusing on the current and future development of smart grids in the generation and transmission of energy, it provides an overview of the smart grid control landscape, and the potential impact of the various investigations presented has for technical aspects of power generation and distribution as well as for human and economic concerns such as pricing, consumption and demand management. A tutorial exposition is provided in each chapter, describing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Topics in these chapters include: wide-area control; issues of estimation and integration at the transmission; distribution, consumers, and demand management; and cyber-physical security for smart grid control systems. The contributors describe the problems involved with each topic, and what impact these problems would have if not solved. The tutorial components and the opportunities and challenges detailed make this book ideal for anyone interested in new paradigms for modernized, smart power grids, and anyone in a field where control is applied. More specifically, it is a valuable resource for students studying smart grid control, and for researchers and academics wishing to extend their knowledge of the topic.
