Book excerpt: Crossing the Owl’s Bridge uses the wisdom of worldwide folk tales to demonstrate how to share, ritualize, and transform grief. Each chapter describes psychological tasks as communicated through folk tales, offers stories about others, and provides guidelines for application. The premise is that although we do have to say goodbye to our material relationship, we are also being presented with a chance to say hello to a different type of relationship. Crossing the Owl’s Bridge illustrates creative outcomes to mourning that allow one to recognize, contain, release, and yet stay in relationship and keep loving. Kim Bateman, Ph.D., has facilitated grief workshops and taught courses in Death and Dying for over 20 years. Her research interests include bereavement, organizational psychology, and humor, and she has presented over 60 projects in the behavioral sciences at regional and national psychology conferences. Dr. Bateman has delivered many notable keynote addresses, including: “There’s a Fox Under My Bed and Pixie Dust in My Hair,” at the Developmental Psychology Conference, “The Psychology of Humor” at the Women’s Wellness Conference, and “College Culture Through the Song Lyrics of Bob Marley,” at the Community College League of California convention. She recently presented a TEDx talk called “Singing Over Bones.” Dr. Bateman serves as the executive dean of the Tahoe-Truckee Campus of Sierra College.

Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of the short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” (1890) by Ambrose Bierce. In this text Bierce creatively uses both structure and content to explore the concept of time, from present to past, and reflecting its transitional and illusive qualities. The story is one of Bierce’s most popular and acclaimed works, alongside “The Devil’s Dictionary” (1911). Bierce (1842-c. 1914) was an American writer, journalist and Civil War veteran associated with the realism literary movement. His writing is noted for its cynical, brooding tones and structural precision.

This hoot of a donut shop serves up delicious snacks to people driving down California's Highway One—treats like the Turkey Talon, the Banana Slug Bar, and the Strawberry Iced Classic. Mattie loves her aunt and the shop, even if she's still dealing with a life without her mom. But not everybody is a fan of Owl's Outstanding Donuts. When an owl taps on Mattie's window one night, Mattie looks out to see suspicious activity not far from the shop. A shady duo is dumping gloop near the highway. And soon people want to blame Aunt Molly! With help from her friends, Mattie sets out to find the real gloopers. Along the way, she'll face fears that have followed her since her mother's passing—and get to know Alfred, a stuffy, donut-loving owl who's also on the case. "Readers of all ages will be cheering—and hooting!—for Mattie and her friends as they track down the culprits in this brilliant, high-stakes mystery with heart. Owl's Outstanding Donuts is, well, simply outstanding!"—Kristen Kittscher, author of The Wig in the Window

Book excerpt: In the night skies above Paris, an adorable young owl teaches her older brother about the power of imagination—and the unconditional love between siblings Hoot the owl is very excited for his little sister, Peep, to join him on the cathedral rooftops. She's finally old enough to learn all his big brother owly wisdom: First, owls say hooo. Second, they always say hooo. Lastly, they ONLY say hooo! But why would Peep say hooo when she could say schweeepty peep or dingity dong? Why would she speak when she could sing? As she explores the breathtaking Parisian cityscape, Peep discovers so many inspiring sights and sounds—the ring of cathedral bells, the slap of waves on stone—that she can’t help but be swept up in the magic of it all. Hoot doesn’t understand Peep’s awe, until he takes a pause to listen . . . and realizes that you're never too old to learn a little something new. From the beloved author/illustrator of the classic picture book Red Sled, this gorgeous read aloud celebrates the wonder found in little things—and in the hearts of dreamers, young and old.
