Book excerpt: Teens have special mental and emotional issues that need to be addressed by pastors and their colleagues in ministry. For this reason, clergy and caregivers need to know about the most common mental disorders that occur in adolescents, including how to assess and diagnose them, what types of treatment can be initiated in the faith community, when referral is required, and to whom to make a referral. This book identifies twenty-two of the most common mental health conditions that occur among adolescents, provides illustrative cases, lists national resources available to help, and suggests when and from whom to seek additional professional help. There is an emphasis on self-help resources available on the Internet, a major source of information for teens.

Book excerpt: This book illuminates the causes of severe adolescent behavioral problems and presents a research-based fifteen-step model for helping families bring about real, lasting change. Incorporating structural and strategic principles, the author's cohesive approach focuses on setting clear rules and consequences; changing the mood and direction of confrontations; neutralizing such problem behaviors as disrespect, truancy, running away, violence, and threats of suicide; and restoring positive, nurturing relationships among family members. Special treatment issues covered include working with single-parent families, outside systems (peers, school, probation officers), divorce and stepfamily problems, and substance misuse. Clearly written, practical, and accessible, the book uses actual case examples to demonstrate each step of the approach.

Book Synopsis Wake Up Counselors! by : William L. Fibkins

Download or read book Wake Up Counselors! written by William L. Fibkins. This book was released on 2013-06-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing individual and group counseling for secondary school students was once a major priority for secondary school counselors. However, many guidance programs have abandoned this role, and counselors have become quasi-administrators who spend most of their time scheduling students for classes, managing mandated testing programs, resolving discipline issues, and advising students on college admissions. Counseling students on personal and well-being issues takes up a very small part of the time. In many school districts, social workers, student assistance counselors, and school psychologists have taken over the counseling duties. Critical issues are now causing school leaders to consider reorganizing school guidance staff so there is a cadre of counselors trained and charged with the mission of providing individual and group counseling for troubled teens. First, the number of troubled teens arriving at the schoolhouse door looking for help has exploded. Second, budget cuts have eliminated or drastically curtailed many of the services of social workers, student assistance counselors, and psychologists. The result? Many once open doors for help are now closed, and schools' counseling services are failing many students, parents, and educators in need of intervention. This book provides a new model in which well-trained counselors can once again regain their historic role in counseling troubled teens, parents, and training staff and students on the front lines to act -- not look the other way -- when they observe a student heading towards the margins of school life.
