Book Synopsis Cosmic Rays, Supernovae and the Interstellar Medium by : M.M. Shapiro

Download or read book Cosmic Rays, Supernovae and the Interstellar Medium written by M.M. Shapiro. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Galactic cosmic rays have far-reaching effects on the interstellar medium, and they are, in turn, profoundly affected by the particles and fields in space. Supernova remnants and their expanding shock fronts pervade the Galaxy, heating the interstellar medium, and accelerating the cosmic rays. The interplay among the cosmic rays, the interstellar medium in which they propagate, and supernovae has been investigated for decades; yet these studies have generated as many enigmas as they have resolved. These puzzles continue to challenge observers and theorists alike. th This volume is devoted to selected lectures presented in the 7 Course of the International School of Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics in Erice, Italy in July-August, 1990. Alltogether, some 400 participants have attended the biennial sessions of this School since its inception in 1978. As its name implies, the School deals with cosmic-ray phenomena viewed in the broader context of astrophysics. Students and Lecturers are attracted from many astrophysical disciplines. Like earlier courses in this series, the present one was organized under the aegis of the Ettore Majorana Centre as a NATO Advanced Study Institute. Given the diverse scientific backgrounds of the students, it was deemed useful to include lectures at the introductory level. Other lectures and contributed talks were at a more advanced level, featuring new developments. If this collection is useful pedagogically, and if it provides some stimulus and information for the mature research worker, then the editors will feel well rewarded.

Book Synopsis Interstellar Medium by : Brian M. Cancellieri

Download or read book Interstellar Medium written by Brian M. Cancellieri. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interstellar medium (or ISM) is the matter that exists in the space between the star systems in a galaxy. This matter includes gas in ionic, atomic, and molecular form, dust, and cosmic rays. It fills interstellar space and blends smoothly into the surrounding intergalactic space. This book presents topical research in the study of interstellar medium, including explosive processes in the interstellar medium as sources of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays; heteronuclear diatomics in diffuse and translucent clouds; far ultraviolet observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud; MDH simulations of Parker instability undergoing cosmic-ray diffusion; deuterium in the interstellar medium and interaction of planetary nebulae, Eta-Carinae and supernova remnants with the interstellar medium.

Book Synopsis The Interstellar Medium, Expanding Nebulae and Triggered Star Formation by : Thomas G. Bisbas

Download or read book The Interstellar Medium, Expanding Nebulae and Triggered Star Formation written by Thomas G. Bisbas. This book was released on 2015-11-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief brings together the theoretical aspects of star formation and ionized regions with the most up-to-date simulations and observations. Beginning with the basic theory of star formation, the physics of expanding HII regions is reviewed in detail and a discussion on how a massive star can give birth to tens or hundreds of other stars follows. The theoretical description of star formation is shown in simplified and state-of-the-art numerical simulations, describing in a more clear way how feedback from massive stars can trigger star and planet formation. This is also combined with spectacular images of nebulae taken by talented amateur astronomers. The latter is very likely to stimulate the reader to observe the structure of nebulae from a different point of view, and better understand the associated star formation therein.
