Download or read book Cool Appliances written by International Energy Agency. This book was released on 2003. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In IEA Member countries, electrical appliances are the fastest growing energy users, after automobiles. Cost-effective technology exists that could improve the energy efficiency of appliances by more than one-third in ten years. Through application of such technology, the greenhouse gases emitted as a result of the use of appliances in IEA Member countries alone could be slashed by the equivalent of 322 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2010. This book assesses the potential energy savings and carbon reductions to be achieved through technical improvements to appliances. It analyses the policy options available to stimulate greater manufacture and use of more efficient appliances. It suggests ways to strengthen existing appliance-efficiency programmes, and it demonstrates how international collaboration can enhance those programmes (IEA Website)

Book Synopsis Refrigerator by : Helen Peavitt

Download or read book Refrigerator written by Helen Peavitt. This book was released on 2017-11-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a late-night snack to a cold beer, there’s nothing that whets the appetite quite like the suctioning sound of a refrigerator being opened. In the early 1930s fewer than ten percent of US households had a mechanical refrigerator, but today they are nearly universal, the primary means by which we keep our food and drink fresh. Yet, for as ubiquitous as refrigerators are, most of us take them for granted, letting them blend into the background of our kitchens, basements, garages, and all the other places where they seem so perfectly convenient. In this book, Helen Peavitt amplifies the hum of the refrigerator in technological history, showing us just how it became such an essential appliance. Peavitt takes us to the early closets, cabinets, and boxes into which we first started packing ice and the various things we were trying to keep cool. From there she charts the development of mechanical and chemical technologies that have led to modern-day refrigeration on both industrial and domestic scales, showing how these technologies have created a completely new method of preserving and transporting perishable goods, having a profound impact on society from the nineteenth century and on. She explores the ways the marketing of refrigerators have expressed and influenced our notions of domestic life, and she looks at how refrigeration has altered the agriculture and food industries as well as our own appetites. Strikingly illustrated, this book offers an informative and entertaining history of an object that has radically changed—in a little over one hundred years—one of the most important things we do: eat.

Book excerpt: The generation that came of age from 1960 to 1980 had front-row seats to the events and personalities that laid the foundation for the Canada we know today. As the generation matured, so too did the country. Chapters range from TV to sports, music to business, and stage to screen. A section includes the lengths individuals went to be “cool.” Another features Canada’s attempts to deal with the big brash neighbour-nation to the south. Equal parts history, pop culture, and trivia, the events and personalities that shaped Canada for years to come are presented with wry humour. Whether you choose this book for entertainment, for nostalgia, for easy-to-read history, or for quirky trivia, you will be reminded of how much change has occurred in Canada over a lifetime.
