Book excerpt: The world's continental shelves are the sites of vast resources of food, energy and minerals, the exploitation of which is continuously increasing. Fluctuating global sea levels throughout the Quaternary period produced multiple transgressive and regressive cycles that profoundly affected and shaped these shelves. The complex interactions among climate, sea level, tectonics, oceanography and sediment input have formed distinctive sediment packages on each shelf and provide a guide to the interpretation of older shelf sequences throughout the geological record. This Memoir compiles studies on 23 selected shelves from all the continents, focusing on their evolution and examining the patterns of sedimentation during the past approximately 125 000 years. In addition to providing basic background information for each area, the chapters consider specific aspects of continental shelf research, from seismic stratigraphy to geomorphology, from palaeoceanography to palaeo sea-level reconstruction and from palaeontology to geochemistry.

Book Synopsis Continental Shelves by : Hendrik Postma

Download or read book Continental Shelves written by Hendrik Postma. This book was released on 1988. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although continental shelves take up only a small part of the ocean's surface, they have their own economic importance. This book describes the biological characteristics of continental shelves between land masses on one side and the open ocean on the other. The influence of the land often causes increased fertility of inner shelf water, including a higher production, but can also increase environmental stress which on marine organisms. Tidal currents cause rapid water mixing and promote exchange of sediments and organic materials between the sea floor with its benthic communities and the overlying water. Offshore, intrusions of ocean eddies and upwelling introduce oceanic species. The book provides a review of general principles of shelf ecosystems, and describes their relation with physical, chemical and geological conditions. It also provides a description of a number of specific shelves from polar to tropical regions. Continental Shelves will be of interest to marine biologists, marine chemists, microbiologists, those working in fisheries science and in ecological modelling. It is hoped that it will give an impetus to accelerated research of continental shelves.

Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth discussion of the biological and ecological geography of the oceans. It synthesizes locally restricted studies of the ocean to generate a global geography of the vast marine world.Based on patterns of algal ecology, the book divides the ocean into four primary compartments, which are then subdivided into secondary compartments.*Includes color insert of the latest in satellite imagery showing the world's oceans, their similarities and differences*Revised and updated to reflect the latest in oceanographic research*Ideal for anyone interested in understanding ocean ecology -- accessible and informative

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Physical and Biological Oceanography of Shelf Seas by : John H. Simpson

Download or read book Introduction to the Physical and Biological Oceanography of Shelf Seas written by John H. Simpson. This book was released on 2012-03-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting and innovative textbook, two leading oceanographers bring together the fundamental physics and biology of the coastal ocean in a quantitative but accessible way for undergraduate and graduate students. Shelf sea processes are comprehensively explained from first principles using an integrated approach to oceanography that helps build a clear understanding of how shelf sea physics underpins key biological processes in these environmentally sensitive regions. Using many observational and model examples, worked problems and software tools, the authors explain the range of physical controls on primary biological production and shelf sea ecosystems. Boxes throughout the book present extra detail for each topic and non-mathematical summary points are provided for physics sections, allowing students to develop an intuitive understanding. The book is fully supported by extensive online materials, including worked solutions to end-of-chapter exercises, additional homework/exam problems with solutions and simple MATLAB and FORTRAN models for running simulations.
