The changing social environment that supports medical consumerism and the need for health information are discussed. Seven library-based consumer health education programs operating in a variety of institutional settings in the U.S. and Canada are described. A number of program functions are analyzed in depth. An overview of health information networking activities, a list of services, and publications of major federal health information clearinghouses are given. A discussion of the application of mass media and modern technology to health promotion illustrates the considerable accomplishments in this emerging new area of library and community service.
