Book excerpt: At present, more than 50% of the entire world population lives in cities. According to the United Nations more than two-thirds of the world's large cities are vulnerable to rising sea levels, exposing millions of people to the risk of extreme floods and storms. Within the coming 30 years, the United Nations project that the number of people living in cities will increase to 60% of the world's population, resulting in even more people living in highly exposed areas. Both scientists and policy makers have addressed the issue of adapting to the challenge of climate change, and both call for embedding long term scenarios in city planning and investments in all sectors. Based on estimations of costs of estimations, it appears that investing in adaptation now would save money in the long term. This book shows the different aspects of climate adaptation. It is an independent investigation of comparative adaptation problems and progress in the cities of Rotterdam, New York and Jakarta. In this regard, each city faces different challenges; one of the lessons of the Connecting Delta Cities initiative is that while cities will follow adaptation paths that may differ, sometimes substantially, each city can learn from the others.

Book Synopsis The Urban Climate Challenge by : Craig Johnson

Download or read book The Urban Climate Challenge written by Craig Johnson. This book was released on 2015-02-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon a variety of empirical and theoretical perspectives, The Urban Climate Challenge provides a hands-on perspective about the political and technical challenges now facing cities and transnational urban networks in the global climate regime. Bringing together experts working in the fields of global environmental governance, urban sustainability and climate change, this volume explores the ways in which cities, transnational urban networks and global policy institutions are repositioning themselves in relation to this changing global policy environment. Focusing on both Northern and Southern experience across the globe, three questions that have strong bearing on the ways in which we understand and assess the changing relationship between cities and global climate system are examined. The Urban Climate Challenge will be of interest to scholars of urban climate policy, global environmental governance and climate change. It will be of interest to readers more generally interested in the ways in which cities are now addressing the inter-related challenges of sustainable urban growth and global climate change. Book Synopsis Comparing Delta Cities by : S.D. Haitsma

Download or read book Comparing Delta Cities written by S.D. Haitsma. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea level rise, storm surges and extreme precipitation pose a threat to deltas worldwide. For centuries deltas have been great places to live, providing fertile land, opportunities for transport over water and beautiful surroundings. Large cities have developed on these specific places, prospering and growing to what they are now: the largest cities in the world. But now climate change and urban growth make delta cities face major future challenges. Cooperation amongst delta cities worldwide is recommended to enhance resilience. This thesis therefore analyzes climate adaptation in the delta cities Rotterdam, New Orleans and San Francisco, in order to provide Tampa Bay with guidelines for climate adaptation.
