Book excerpt: In a world where gender-based violence remains an alarming global issue, with statistics revealing high rates of physical and sexual violence against women, the need for effective intervention is paramount. Grounded in the multifaceted approach advocated by international expert groups, Comprehensive Sexuality Education for Gender-Based Violence Prevention strives to illuminate the vital relationship between comprehensive sexuality education and the prevention of gender-based violence among young people. This book delves into the critical aspects outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing the urgent call for expansive, multi-sectoral interventions. Drawing from a wealth of scientific literature, it emphasizes the importance of moving beyond the biological aspects of sexuality education to encompass emotional, social, and cultural elements. Through a multidisciplinary lens, this book explores how comprehensive sexuality education can serve as a powerful tool to combat gender-based violence, offering young people an understanding of sexuality, gender dynamics, and healthy relationships. The chapters examine the integration of inclusive curricula in schools, the pivotal role of families in sexuality education, and collaborative efforts between activists, schools, and education stakeholders. This comprehensive resource caters to a diverse audience, making it an indispensable tool for researchers seeking knowledge and inspiration for further inquiry, teachers enriching their educational programs, and health professionals to understand the intersection of education, sexuality, and violence.

Book excerpt: Sexual violence is a critical social issue in Australia, with reported cases steadily increasing each year (ABS 2016). A key element in efforts to decrease sexual violence against women is to emphasise sexual consent. This Book uses interviews with 23 same-sex attracted women to investigate how same-sex attracted women understand sexual consent; how sexual consent operates in same-sex attracted women's relationships; and where interviewees learned about sexual consent. Findings from these interviews align with international efforts to prevent sexual violence and promote affirmative sexual consent and provide a more inclusive model of what sexual consent looks like for women. Internationally, changing attitudes about sexual violence coupled with the growing number of women's voices being heard through online platforms, have pushed many educational institutions to revisit sexual violence prevention measures. In the current cultural climate, sexual consent is increasingly considered a key factor in healthy sexual interactions, rather than simply a tool to distinguish between wanted and unwanted sex. This trend is less apparent in Australian, where there is little evidence that sexual consent is explicitly discussed in sexuality education.

Book Synopsis Sexual Education Around the World - Past, Present and Future Issues by : Rogena Sterling

Download or read book Sexual Education Around the World - Past, Present and Future Issues written by Rogena Sterling. This book was released on 2023-09-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual education is a worldwide concern that intersects with various attitudes, values, and cultural norms. It is an area of life that has for many years been kept private, but now there is recognition that there is a need to support people, especially young people in modern societies. The way sexual education is taught and applied within institutions shapes the way we understand and approach human sexuality. Various societies have chosen various means to provide sexual education both at school and to the wider society. There is still much more development and support needed, however. We can begin to identify strategies for overcoming challenges in sex education, promoting healthier attitudes, and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their own bodies and relationships. This book is organized into three sections. The first section focuses on issues in sexual education, such as sexual harassment, sexuality and relationship education and advocacy by people with disabilities, future challenges, and sex differences in physical attractiveness. The second section focuses on the means of sexual health education interventions, including the use of technology. The last section includes a chapter on sex education and the invisibility of intersex people in the curriculum.
