Book excerpt: Communications and Controls in Cyber Physical Systems: Theory, Design and Applications in Smart Grids provides readers with all they need to know about cyber physical systems (CPSs), such as smart grids, which have attracted intensive studies in recent years. Communications and controls are of key importance for maintaining and stabilizing the operation of the physical dynamics in these complicated systems. This book presents a systematic treatment on the communication and control aspects of CPSs, along with applications to the smart grid in four parts, including the basics of CPS, communications and controls, an explanation of the integration with CPS, coverage of controls with information constraints in CPS, and an applications oriented focus on smart grids as a CPS. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples and illustrations, the authors' discuss key communication and controls design methods that can be integrated into a CPS, how communication and control schemes can be applied in practical systems such as smart grids, new directions and approaches for traditional engineers and researchers in communications, and controls and power systems as they relates to CPSs. - Presents a systematic treatment on the communication and control aspects of cyber physical systems (CPSs) - Discusses key communication and controls design methods that can be integrated into a CPS - Demonstrates how communication and control schemes can be applied in practical systems such as smart grids - Includes new directions and approaches for traditional engineers and researchers in communications, controls, and power systems as they relate to CPSs

Book Synopsis Cyber-Physical Systems: A Model-Based Approach by : Walid M. Taha

Download or read book Cyber-Physical Systems: A Model-Based Approach written by Walid M. Taha. This book was released on 2020-09-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise yet comprehensive Open Access textbook, future inventors are introduced to the key concepts of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Using modeling as a way to develop deeper understanding of the computational and physical components of these systems, one can express new designs in a way that facilitates their simulation, visualization, and analysis. Concepts are introduced in a cross-disciplinary way. Leveraging hybrid (continuous/discrete) systems as a unifying framework and Acumen as a modeling environment, the book bridges the conceptual gap in modeling skills needed for physical systems on the one hand and computational systems on the other. In doing so, the book gives the reader the modeling and design skills they need to build smart, IT-enabled products. Starting with a look at various examples and characteristics of Cyber-Physical Systems, the book progresses to explain how the area brings together several previously distinct ones such as Embedded Systems, Control Theory, and Mechatronics. Featuring a simulation-based project that focuses on a robotics problem (how to design a robot that can play ping-pong) as a useful example of a CPS domain, Cyber-Physical Systems: A Model-Based Approach demonstrates the intimate coupling between cyber and physical components, and how designing robots reveals several non-trivial control problems, significant embedded and real-time computation requirements, and a need to consider issues of communication and preconceptions.

Book Synopsis Cyber-Physical Systems by : Fei Hu

Download or read book Cyber-Physical Systems written by Fei Hu. This book was released on 2013-09-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have quickly become one of the hottest computer applications today. With their tight integration of cyber and physical objects, it is believed CPSs will transform how we interact with the physical world, just like the Internet transformed how we interact with one another. A CPS could be a system at multiple scales, from large smart bridges with fluctuation detection and responding functions, to autonomous cars and tiny implanted medical devices. Cyber-Physical Systems: Integrated Computing and Engineering Design supplies comprehensive coverage of the principles and design of CPSs. It addresses the many challenges that must be overcome and outlines a roadmap of how to get there. Emphasizes the integration of cyber computing and physical objects control Covers important CPS theory foundations and models Includes interesting case studies of several important civilian and health care applications that illustrate the CPS design process Addresses the collaboration of the sensing and controlling of a physical system with robust software architecture Explains how to account for random failure events that can occur in a real CPS environment Presented in a systematic manner, the book begins by discussing the basic concept underlying CPSs and examining some challenging design issues. It then covers the most important design theories and modeling methods for a practical CPS. Next, it moves on to sensor-based CPSs, which use embedded sensors and actuators to interact with the physical world. The text presents concrete CPS designs for popular civilian applications, including building and energy management. Reflecting the importance of human health care in society, it includes CPS examples of rehabilitation applications such as virtual reality-based disability recovery platforms.

Book Synopsis Networked and Event-Triggered Control Approaches in Cyber-Physical Systems by : Jinhui Zhang

Download or read book Networked and Event-Triggered Control Approaches in Cyber-Physical Systems written by Jinhui Zhang. This book was released on 2022-01-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insertion of communication networks in feedback control loops complicates analysis and synthesis of cyber-physical systems (CPSs), and network-induced uncertainties may degrade system control performance. Thus, this book researches networked delay compensation and event-triggered control approaches for a series of CPSs subject to network-induced uncertainties. The authors begin with an introduction to the concepts and challenges of CPSs, followed by an overview of networked control approaches and event-triggered control strategies in CPSs. Then, networked delay compensation and event-triggered control approaches are proposed for CPSs with network communication delay, data dropout, signal quantization, and event-triggered communication. More specifically, networked delay compensation approaches are proposed for linear/nonlinear networked controlled plants with time-varying and random network communication delays and data dropouts. To reduce computational burden and network communication loads in CPSs, event-triggered control, self-triggered control, co-design of event-triggered control and quantized control techniques, and event-triggered disturbance rejection control approaches are also presented. This book is an essential text for researchers and engineers interested in cybersecurity, networked control, and CPSs. It would also prove useful for graduate students in the fields of science, engineering, and computer science.
