Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the International Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval Symposium, CMMR 2004, held in Esbjerg, Denmark in May 2004. The 26 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the area, the papers address a broad variety of topics. The papers are organized in topical sections on pitch and melody detection; rhythm, tempo, and beat; music generation and knowledge; music performance, rendering, and interfaces; music scores and synchronization; synthesis, timbre, and musical playing; music representation and retrieval; and music analysis.

Book Synopsis Musical Creativity by : Guerino Mazzola

Download or read book Musical Creativity written by Guerino Mazzola. This book was released on 2011-11-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a new approach to musical creativity, dealing with the semiotics, mathematical principles, and software for creativity processes. After a thorough introduction, the book offers a first practical part with a detailed tutorial for students in composition and improvisation, using musical instruments and music software. The second, theoretical part deals with historical, actual, and new principles of creative processes in music, based on the results and methods developed in the first author’s book Topos of Music and referring to semiotics, predicative objects, topos theory, and object-oriented concept architectures. The third part of the book details four case studies in musical creativity, including an analysis of the six variations of Beethoven's sonata op. 109, a discussion of the creative process in a CD coproduced in 2011 by the first and second authors, a recomposition of Boulez’s "Structures pour deux pianos" using the Rubato software module BigBang developed by the third author, and the Escher theorem from mathematical gesture theory in music. This is both a textbook addressed to undergraduate and graduate students of music composition and improvisation, and also a state-of-the-art survey addressed to researchers in creativity studies and music technology. The book contains summaries and end-of-chapter questions, and the authors have used the book as the main reference to teach an undergraduate creativity studies program and also to teach composition. The text is supported throughout with musical score examples.

Book Synopsis Advances in Case-Based Reasoning by : Peter Funk

Download or read book Advances in Case-Based Reasoning written by Peter Funk. This book was released on 2004-11-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR 2004) was held from August 30 through September 2, at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. ECCBR was born in Aberdeen, UK (2002), after a series of European workshops held in Trento, Italy(2000), Dublin, Ireland(1998), Lausanne, Switzerland (1996), Paris, France (1994), and Kaiserslautern, Germany (1993). ECCBR is the premier international forum for researchers and practitioners of case-based reasoning (CBR) in the years interleaving with the biennial international counterpart ICCBR, whose 5th edition was held in Trondheim, Norway in 2003. The CBR community has shown for years a deep interest in the application of its research to real-world problems. As a result, the first day of both ECCBR and ICCBR has been traditionally dedicated to presenting industrial CBR complications. ECCBR 2004 Industry Day was co-chaired by Mehmet Göker and Francisco Martín who invited professionals from different fields to describe their fielded CBR systems. The second day of the conference was dedicated to four workshops focusing on the following research interests: CBR in health sciences, explanation in CBR, computational creativity, and CBR applied to time series prediction. We are grateful to the Workshop Program co-chairs, Pablo Gervás and Kalyan Moy Gupta, for their efforts in coordinating these workshops, along with the individual workshop chairs and participants. Materials from the Ind- try Day and the workshops were published separately and can be obtained from the ECCBR 2004 website, http://www. idt. mdh. se/eccbr.

Download or read book Evolutionary Computer Music written by Eduardo R. Miranda. This book was released on 2007-10-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the applications of evolutionary computation to music and the tools needed to create and study such systems. These tools can be combined to create surrogate artificial worlds populated by interacting simulated organisms in which complex musical experiments can be performed. The book demonstrates that evolutionary systems can be used to create and to study musical compositions and cultures in ways that have never before been achieved.

Book Synopsis Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval. Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music by : Sølvi Ystad

Download or read book Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval. Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music written by Sølvi Ystad. This book was released on 2009-06-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval, CMMR 2008 - Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May 2008. The 21 revised full papers presented were specially reviewed and corrected for this proceedings volume. CMMR 2008 seeks to enlarge upon the Sense of Sounds-concept by taking into account the musical structure as a whole. More precisely, the workshop will have as its theme Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music. The purpose is hereby to establish rigorous research alliances between computer and engineering sciences (information retrieval, programming, acoustics, signal processing) and areas within the humanities (in particular perception, cognition, musicology, philosophy), as well as to globally address the notion of sound meaning and its implications in music, modeling and retrieval.
