Book excerpt: Many environmental problems resulting from atmospheric, land and water pollution are now widely understood. The combination of both improved technology and legislative pressure has led to a reduction in pollution from industrial practices in the West in recent years. However, sustainable development is dependent upon a new approach to environmental protection - clean technology. This book is in two parts. The first explores the ecological principles governing the function of ecosystems, sustain ability and biodiversity (Chapter 1) and the problems resulting from atmospheric pollution (Chapter 2), water pollution (Chapter 3) and land pollution (Chapter 4). For example, there is increasing international concern that the combustion of fossil fuels is leading to an increase in the levels of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen gases which pollute the atmosphere of our planet. The enhanced levels of carbon gases such as carbon dioxide may cause change in our global climate and, in tum, lead to flooding and loss of low-lying coastal regions. In addition, the deposition of sulphur and nitrogen oxides is believed to be the cause of 'acid rain' which has led to loss of fish stocks from upland lochs and damage to forestry plantations.

Book Synopsis Clean Technology by : Allan Johansson

Download or read book Clean Technology written by Allan Johansson. This book was released on 1992-08-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to pressure from government regulations, the design and development of new manufacturing processes are shifting to pollution prevention and waste reduction at the source through the implementation of proper process and product design. Clean Technology incorporates ideas for pollution prevention/waste reduction at the early stages of process design and development. It covers guidelines for development projects, provides background information, and presents general principles for sound engineering together with pollution reduction alternatives. Industrial and hazardous waste, process engineering, energy systems, materials and product design, recycling, and biodegradability are among the subjects discussed. Market mechanisms, economy in production, and policy questions are also covered. Clean Technology will be an important reference for environmental engineers, process and design engineers, consultants, students, and libraries. It provides engineers, consultants, and students with background and techniques for improved waste reduction and pollution control through proper engineering. It will also be a valuable textbook for advanced engineering programs that are working within today's environmental policies.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Energy and the Environment: A Clean Technology Approach by : N.D. Kaushika

Download or read book Sustainable Energy and the Environment: A Clean Technology Approach written by N.D. Kaushika. This book was released on 2016-05-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emerges from the recognition that energy, environment and ecosystems are dynamically and inextricably connected. The energy environment system must be addressed in its totality, so that we can devise sustainable solutions that incorporate both economic growth and environmental conservation. No single clean energy source will sustain long-term energy security, and fossil fuels will remain prominent in the mix of energy sources for several decades to come. Energy solutions, therefore, must employ a broad and diverse range of approaches, including cleaner fossil fuel technologies, and an affordable transition to greener power generation employing waste, water and renewable resources. Moreover, adapting to this changing global energy picture will require a transformational shift in the ways we use and deliver energy services. The authors begin with a broad introductory chapter on sustainable energy and the environment, classifying energy resources, cataloging environmental degradations, and outlining the concepts and practices of sustainability. In Chapters Two and Three, they summarize the basic constituents of the environment, the biosphere and its natural cycles, and offer a model of Earth’s planetary temperatures and the greenhouse effect. Chapters Four and Five outline conventional energy and power systems, and related environmental degradations. The next several chapters cover clean coal technologies for power generation, and discuss sustainable energy and power technologies based on both thermal and photovoltaic solar energy, along with biomass and wind. The final chapters examine in depth the management of waste and water, pollution control and energy conservation. The book introduces a unique approach to sustainability and energy conservation which emphasizes the relationships between underlying scientific principles and practical applications employed in engineering solutions. All this is offered in a form that matches the requirements of college-level environmental science and engineering courses.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Climate Change Research by : Assoc Prof Søren Riis

Download or read book Rethinking Climate Change Research written by Assoc Prof Søren Riis. This book was released on 2012-08-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems and debates surrounding climate change possess closely intertwined social and scientific aspects. This book highlights the importance of researching climate change through a multi-disciplinary approach; namely through cultural studies, communication studies, and clean-technology studies. These three dimensions taken together have the ability to constitute a positive agenda for climate change science in its broader understanding. To cope with the climate change challenge, not only do we need new energy efficient technologies, other ways of living, and new ways to communicate but we especially need new ways to start thinking about climate change across disciplines and backgrounds. We need to begin thinking across engineering, cultural science and communication in order to create innovative solutions, as well as to generate optimistic and progressive narratives about the future. Accentuating these 'softer' scientific disciplines, their overlaps, and the positive discourses they can create, this book provides some more profoundly researched themes pertaining to climate change and by that, strengthening the analytical as well as the integrative approaches toward the fundamental questions at stake.
