Book Synopsis The Church on the Other Side by : Brian D. McLaren

Download or read book The Church on the Other Side written by Brian D. McLaren. This book was released on 2009-12-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a sincere church leader or a committed church member, you’re probably tired of easy steps, easy answers, and facile formulas for church health, growth, and renewal. You know it’s not that easy. In The Church on the Other Side, you’ll find something different: honest, clear, and creative thinking about our churches, along with a passionate challenge to thoughtful action and profound, liberating change. In understandable language, with an energetic and engaging writing style, and drawing from daily, down-to-earth pastoral experience, Brian McLaren offers thirteen strategies for navigating the modern/postmodern transition. You’ll learn the critical distinctions between renewed, restored, and reinvented churches. You’ll discover the importance of redefining your mission, of finding fresh ways to conceive of and communicate the Gospel, and of entering the postmodern world by understanding it, engaging it, and debugging your faith from modern 'viruses.' McLaren believes we are in an epochal sea-change, perhaps even more significant than the last great cultural transition about 500 years ago, when the world crossed over from the medieval to the modern era. He believes that today’s breakthroughs in communications, education, travel, cultural diversity, science, economics, politics, and philosophy are combining to create a new matrix in which Christians will live, worship, work, and pursue our mission. 'We are exploring off the map,' writes Brian McLaren, 'looking into mysterious territory beyond our familiar world on this side of the boundary between modern and postmodern worlds.' Even if you’ve read this book’s first edition, Reinventing Your Church, you’ll find enough new and revised material here to warrant a second purchase. And if you’re encountering these concepts for the first time, you’ll find wise guidance to help you and your church begin the journey toward the other side of the postmodern divide. You’ll learn to think differently, see church, life, and these revolutionary times in a new way, and act with courage, hope, and an adventurous spirit.

Book Synopsis Church on the Way by : Nell Becker Sweeden

Download or read book Church on the Way written by Nell Becker Sweeden. This book was released on 2015-07-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of Christian hospitality reaches back to the early centuries of Christian life as well as deep into Jewish history, life, and Scripture. This practice is alive today in Christian churches and in parachurch organizations within the United States, but new contextual realities--in particular twenty-first-century global migration patterns--have altered the conditions under which hospitality is practiced. The reality of migration and its effect on human lives disrupts static conceptions of hospitality and challenges ecclesial communities toward contextual appropriation of hospitality practice. This volume explores Christian hospitality practice in light of twenty-first-century U.S. Latino/a migration, and it develops the notion of a journeying hospitality of accompaniment with and among persons migrating, which fosters deeper relationships and formation. The shifting identities of persons "on the move" challenge assumptions about what it means to welcome another in hospitality and, ultimately, what it means to be church from within these new relationships. In turn, the new conceptions and expressions of hospitality offered in this book press how the nature and mission of the church will be oriented toward new ecclesial patterns and alternative forms of residing on earth.

Book Synopsis In the Way by : Damian Gerke

Download or read book In the Way written by Damian Gerke. This book was released on 2020-08-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church began as a discipleship movement known as "The Way." Despite the best of intentions, church as we know it in the West is unknowingly blocking discipleship multiplication-which we must have to accomplish the Great Commission. It's time for the church in the West to be in The Way, without being in the way. Written with pastors and church leaders in mind, In the Way: Evaluates our current discipleship methods and introduces the disciple-multiplying movement (DMM) approach that multiplies disciples organically. Examines 25 separate elements of church operations to explain how the Western church blocks discipleship multiplication. Lays out three strategies for implementing a DMM approach, based on real DMM-practicing churches-not theoretical concepts. In the Way is also timely. COVID-19 scattered and shut in congregations virtually overnight. It exposed a number of disciple-making deficiencies, legacy forms and practices inherited from Europe centuries ago. Pastors and church leaders have been scrambling in response, looking for ways to equip their congregations apart from buildings and centralized programming. In the Way gives them a path forward, providing options for both existing churches and new church starts. It's time for church as we know it (CAWKI) to join in the disciple-multiplying movement (DMM) approaches that have produced millions of new believers over the last several decades-even in countries intensely resistant to Christianity. God is doing a new thing in our time (again), and In the Way will show you how the legacy church in the West can be in The Way, without being in the way.
